Treatment Summary

Brimonidine is a medication used to reduce intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. It is a third generation alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, meaning it binds to alpha-2 adrenoceptors more selectively than other similar drugs. Brimonidine is also known as Alphagan and Simbrinza and is used topically to treat rosacea in adults under the brand name Mirvaso. It is an effective and safe alternative to beta-blockers for patients with or at risk for cardiopulmonary disease.

Effectiveness

How Simbrinza Affects Patients

Brimonidine is a medicine that targets the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor in the body, reducing the risk of certain side effects like low blood pressure and drowsiness. When used in the eyes, it has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure in people with glaucoma, and can reduce redness and inflammation in people with rosacea. Taking brimonidine by mouth can cause a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, as well as a lengthening of the PR interval on an electrocardiogram. Brimonidine has also been studied for its possible neuroprotective effects, though further research is needed.

How Simbrinza works in the body

Brimonidine is a drug used to treat glaucoma and rosacea. In the eye, it works by activating alpha-2 adrenoreceptors. This helps reduce the production of aqueous humour and increases uveoscleral outflow. This cutdown in fluid pressure lowers intraocular pressure (IOP). Reducing IOP helps reduce the risk of vision loss from glaucoma. On the skin, brimonidine works by narrowing the small arteries and veins, reducing redness and inflammation.

Simbrinza Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The amount of brimonidine needed to cause harm in mice is 50mg/kg, and 100mg/kg in rats. If an adult takes too much brimonidine, they may experience low blood pressure, weakness, vomiting, drowsiness, slowed heart rate, breathing problems, low body temperature, and seizures. Treatment for this kind of overdose includes providing supportive care. Reports of overdose in young children have also been seen and can cause similar symptoms. There is no evidence that taking brimonidine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding will cause harm. However, it is not recommended for infants under 2 or for pediatric patients under 18 due to

Simbrinza for Increased Pressure in the Eye

I'm 75 years old and have tried a lot of different medications. It's important to remember that all medications come with potential side effects. I started using Simbrinza five months ago when my pressure was 37. Now, my pressure is only 15! This medicine is fantastic--it's the best without a doubt. There are no negative side effects for me, just a little bit of blurred vision that goes away after five minutes. I'm very happy now thanks to Simbrinza.

Simbrinza for Increased Pressure in the Eye

I had some sensitivity to light and spasms in my eye muscles. It was painful. When I take the medicine, I pinch my tear ducts for five minutes so that I don't taste it at all. Then I sponge my eyes and dry them three times using water and tissues. This removes the remaining preservatives in the Simbitza. Without this method, I can't use it.

Simbrinza for Increased Pressure in the Eye

The side effects didn't last long and this is the only medication I've found that doesn't cause inflammation of the retina. It's very expensive, but worth it to me.

Simbrinza for Wide-Angle Glaucoma

The tip of the bottle is extremely sharp, and needs to be changed to a more rounded and smoother tip. (Look at other eye drop bottles). This drug is used primarily by our aging population and getting poked with this sharp head bottle can prove very dangerous. I've only been using this for a week and already hurt myself at least 4x. Please consider changing it ASAP

Simbrinza for Increased Pressure in the Eye

Although this medication has lowered my blood pressure, I've experienced a number of negative side effects like eye irritation and back pain. I'm not sure if it's worth the trade-off at this point.

Simbrinza for Wide-Angle Glaucoma

I switched from Cosopt to Simbrinza in an effort to more effectively control my pressure. Though the Simbrinza didn't reduce the pressure as much as I would have liked (30 to 24), it did come with side effects of dry, irritated eyes and very blurred vision. The dry mouth after morning dose was tolerable but being unable to see clearly was not.

Simbrinza for Increased Pressure in the Eye

I started to feel very ill after taking Simbrinza on the third day. My blood pressure was 70/41 and my pulse was 42. I called an ambulance and was taken to the hospital. I felt terrible with a feeling of heaviness affecting my whole body.

Simbrinza for Wide-Angle Glaucoma

After a few days of using this product, my eyes would burn and water incessantly. The light sensitivity was so bad that I had to stay in dark rooms. Upon further research, I found out that one of the ingredients is sulfa; which I'm allergic to. No wonder my eyes were messed up!

Simbrinza for Increased Pressure in the Eye

I'm not sure if this is working or not; I've only been on it for three weeks. I can't sing in choir, have a dry mouth, and feel tired and dizzy. I think I will go off of it immediately. This has been really affecting my ability to function; I have no energy and can't sleep. My kids at school are asking why I have blood in my eyes from the bags under them.

AI-Based Screening for Glaucoma

18+
All Sexes
Birmingham, AL

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if implementation of an eye screening program at Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) clinics provides results that participants may have glaucoma, and/or other eye conditions (diabetic retinopathy, cataract, visual acuity impairment). The glaucoma screening will incorporate use of an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted screening tool. This project is called AI-RONA. The main questions it aims to answer are: * How does this eye screening program compare to the rate of glaucoma and other eye conditions detected at other FQHC clinics where the screening program has not been implemented? * Do particpants who screen positive for these conditions adhere to the physician's recommendation for a follow-up examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist? * Are referral rates for a follow-up comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist similar to those implemented by an ophthalmologist using telemedicine (that is, using the results of the screening to make a diagnosis remotely)? * What is the cost-effectiveness of the AI-assisted screening program in diagnosing glaucoma as compared to a physician-guided program? * Are participants completing the screening satisfied with it? * Are physicians at the FQHC clinics administering the screening satisfied with it? Participants will: * Undergo an ocular screening whose goal is to detect glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and/or impairment in visual acuity. If the screening indicates that participants may have these conditions, participants will be referred for a comprehensive eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. * Following the screening, participants and physicians will complete a survey on their satisfaction with the program.
