What is Ribasphere

RibavirinThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryRibavirin is an antiviral medication used to treat hepatitis C, along with other viral infections such as Lasser fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever, and Hantavirus infection. It can also be used to reduce the risk of relapse in combination with other drugs when treating hepatitis C. It is a prodrug that is metabolized into nucleoside analogs which blocks viral RNA synthesis and viral mRNA capping. Ribavirin is typically used in combination therapies, as it is not effective for chronic hepatitis C when used alone. When used in combination therapy, it can improve the success rate of

Effectiveness

How Ribasphere Affects PatientsRibavirin is a medicine that targets viruses. It works by increasing the number of mutations in the virus's genetic material, making it difficult for the virus to copy itself. It also affects an enzyme called RNA dependent RNA polymerase, which is needed for the virus to reproduce. Ribavirin blocks the enzyme, preventing the virus from making more copies of itself.
How Ribasphere works in the bodyRibavirin works in many ways to stop viral replication. It binds to the enzyme that joins together nucleotides to make viral genetic material, preventing it from working properly. It also blocks an enzyme that helps the virus create proteins and mimics a molecule needed to make more genetic material, preventing it from being made. Ribavirin also causes mutations in the virus, which makes it unable to reproduce. Finally, it shifts the body's immune response towards fighting the virus more effectively.

Ribasphere Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking both Rivabirin and PEG-Interferon Alfa-2A can cause flu-like symptoms, depression, suicidal thoughts, insomnia, and irritability, as well as a relapse of drug abuse or overdose. It can also cause bacterial infections, anemia, and liver problems. Animal studies have found that taking a high dose of Rivabirin can be toxic and potentially carcinogenic.

Patient Q&A Section about ribasphere

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is the difference between interferon and peginterferon?

"Pegylated interferon, also known as peginterferon, is a form of interferon that has been chemically modified with a molecule called polyethylene glycol. It is used to treat hepatitis c and, less commonly, hepatitis b."

Answered by AI

Is ribavirin still used for Hep C?

"The treatment of hepatitis c with ribavirin and interferon or peginterferon is no longer recommended because it is not effective and has a lot of harmful side effects. Ribavirin still has a limited role to play when it is used with some other drugs that directly attack the virus, or in combination with other drugs."

Answered by AI

Is ribavirin still used?

"Ribavirin is still used to treat patients who have not responded to other treatments, as well as those with liver disease that has gotten worse. In this review, we look at the evidence supporting the use of ribavirin in combination with other oral drugs to treat hepatitis c."

Answered by AI

What is the use of ribavirin?

"Ribavirin is a medication used to treat chronic hepatitis c infection, in combination with injectable interferon alfa-2b, peginterferon alfa-2a, or peginterferon alfa-2b. It is available in tablet form and requires a doctor's prescription."
