How Promethegan Affects Patients

Promethazine is a drug used to reduce pain, induce sedation, and treat allergies. It usually works for 4-6 hours, but can last up to 12 hours. It is important to warn patients about the potential side effects of this drug, which include drowsiness, difficulty breathing, increased risk of seizures, and decreased bone marrow production.

How Promethegan works in the body

Promethazine works by blocking histamine, dopamine, and other receptors in the body. This helps to relieve allergy symptoms, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and ease nausea and vomiting.

Promethegan Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The lowest toxic dose of promethazine in rats is 170mg/kg when given intraperitoneally, and 400mg/kg when given subcutaneously. The lowest toxic dose in mice is 160mg/kg intraperitoneally and 240mg/kg subcutaneously, and 255mg/kg orally. Overdosing on promethazine can lead to mild central nervous system and cardiovascular depression, low blood pressure, decreased breathing, loss of consciousness, muscle stiffness, spasms, convulsions, dry mouth, flushing, gastrointestinal symptoms, and fixed, dilated pupils. Treatment for an overdose should include administering activated charcoal

I've found this to be an effective method of preventing nausea when taking the narcotic Tromadol. In the past, I tried taking Hydrocodine but couldn't tolerate it because of how nauseous it made me. With this treatment, I did get constipation--but that's also a side effect of Tromadol.

Promethegan for Feel Like Throwing Up

For me, being nauseous is one of the absolute worst feelings. And if I vomit once, it's downhill from there because I can't stop. It can make you drowsy but that's not a big set back for me. The headache it brings is quite bad, but I'd rather have an awful headache then being awfully nauseous and vomiting.

This medication was very effective at treating my nausea. However, it made me extremely drowsy and I slept for 14 hours straight. The next day I felt groggy and had a dull headache. I suspect that the dosage was too high for my small frame (I weigh 116 pounds). If you have sleep apnea, I would not recommend taking this medication as it could make your condition worse.
