The Generic name of this drug

Treatment Summary

Salbutamol is a medication used to treat asthma and COPD. It is a selective beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist that is 29 times more effective at targeting the lungs compared to the heart. Salbutamol is a mixture of two different isomers, the R- and S-isomers. The R-isomer is 150 times more effective than the S-isomer, but it is also more expensive. Salbutamol is used to treat acute episodes of bronchospasm, prevent exercise-induced asthma, and treat chronic respiratory disorders like COPD.

Effectiveness

How Proair Hfa Affects Patients

Salbutamol, also known as albuterol, is a drug used to open up the airways and make it easier to breathe. It works by stimulating the beta-1 and beta-2 receptors in the body, causing vasodilation, muscle relaxation, and a faster heartbeat. Although Salbutamol is mostly specific to the beta-2 receptors, it can still affect beta-1 receptors which can cause an increase in insulin and sugar levels in the blood. Salbutamol may also cause a decrease in potassium levels.

How Proair Hfa works in the body

Salbutamol works by activating beta2-adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle. This activates a chemical process that relaxes the muscle and lowers the amount of calcium in the cells. This reduces the tension in the muscles, allowing the airways to open up. Salbutamol also prevents the release of mediators from mast cells in the airway. It's usually effective within 5 to 15 minutes and can last up to 6 hours. It has fewer cardiovascular side effects than isoproterenol and produces more respiratory relief.

When to interrupt dosage

The suggested measure of Proair Hfa is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, including Bronchodilator Agents, Emphysema and Wheezing. The quantity of dosage fluctuates in agreement with the technique of delivery featured in the table underneath.

Proair Hfa for Asthma

I have seen people complain about only getting 40 good puffs out of this before it clogs. My friend suggested that I rinse the applicator under running hot water, let it air dry overnight, and shake it at least 20 times before using. This has worked really well for me and I haven't had any issues since.

Proair Hfa for Asthma

This inhaler is effective when it works, but only for about 60 puffs. After that, the spray nozzle gets clogged and it's effectively useless. As someone with asthma, this is not a very comforting feeling.

Proair Hfa for Asthma

In my 40 years of experience with asthma, I have found PROAIR to be the worst inhaler on the market. VENTOLIN is much more effective in my opinion. It seems like the decision to stop production of the other inhalers was made by people who don't suffer from asthma and don't understand how important a good inhaler can be.

Proair Hfa for Bronchitis

I sought out medical attention for my cough at an urgent care, and they prescribed me this inhaler. Unfortunately, it did nothing to improve my condition over the course of four or five days. If you're considering this medication, I would recommend looking elsewhere – Symbicort worked much better for me.

Proair Hfa for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease

My husband needed to start using an inhaler and Ventolin worked great for him, but then his doctor prescribed Proventil and our insurance gave us ProAir. The pump was faulty from the beginning; I never experienced this issue when I had asthma years ago. It's a waste of money and it's dangerous--this should be taken off the market.

Proair Hfa for Asthma Attack

Do not bother with this inhaler. It actually makes your breathing worse by using a powder instead of liquid. I've had to go to the ER twice now because Walgreens won't give me Proventil, which is what my doctor prescribed in the first place.

Proair Hfa for Asthma

The propulsion system is way too weak on this product. I often can't tell if I'm actually receiving the medication or not. It's very scary not knowing whether or not the invisible mist is working, but my insurance won't pay for anything else. If you can, try to get a different prescription from your doctor.

Proair Hfa for Asthma

The new design for this inhaler is really not good. You just have to huff it, and there's no indicator if you're actually getting any medicine. I'm worried that if I have a real asthma attack, I won't be able to get the right dosage because of how hard you have to puff. Avoid this new model altogether and stick with the old one.

Proair Hfa for Asthma Attack

I have both asthma and RA, which makes using my hands difficult. Proair is very hard for me to use; I can't open the lid or compress the canister, so it doesn't help me during an asthma attack. It's also more expensive than other inhalers that actually work.

I think this drug is dangerous and not at all effective. My pharmacist told me that the doctors who prescribe proair receive a "thank you" payment of $25 from the pharmaceutical company. I find this unethical and will be asking my doctor to switch my prescription next week.

Behavioral Nudge Texts for Flu Vaccination

Any Age
All Sexes
Aurora, CO

Influenza infection leads to significant morbidity and mortality each year. Influenza vaccines can reduce the risk of flu and the severity of flu illness, In addition, flu vaccinations can reduce flu complications such as pneumonia or worsening of chronic heart or lung disease. Each year, Kaiser Permanente of Colorado offers influenza vaccines to patients at no cost either at primary care clinic appointments or flu walk-in clinics in the fall prior to the upcoming flu season. In addition, as part of clinic appointment reminder text messages, there is a message to get the flu vaccine for patients who have not received the vaccine prior to the clinic visit. Building on these flu reminder text messages for patients who have not received a flu vaccine, this study will test different behavioral nudge text messages to improve influenza vaccination rates.

Antibiotic Duration for Infections in Children

60 - 17
All Sexes
Birmingham, AL

Infections like pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infection (also called SSTI or cellulitis), and urinary tract infections (UTI) are some of the most common reasons children get admitted to the hospital. All three of these conditions require antibiotics for treatment. Although antibiotics are needed to treat the infection and help children feel better, taking them longer than needed can negatively impact children and their families. Negative impacts include things like the burdens of taking more medications and medication side effects. There are guidelines (instructions) from expert medical organizations that suggest the number of days children need antibiotics, but they give a wide range (between 5 and 14 days). Unfortunately, these guidelines are not based on high-quality studies. National data suggests that doctors often choose on the higher end of this range when writing prescriptions for children in the hospital. Our three caregiver co-investigators, other parents of hospitalized children, doctors, other care providers, and researchers, all believe that additional study is needed to determine the best length of antibiotic treatment that weighs both the benefits and harms of antibiotics. The goal of our study is to understand if 5 total days of antibiotic treatment compared to 10 total days of antibiotic treatment is better for children who have been in the hospital for pneumonia, SSTI, or UTI. We will study this question through a randomized control trial. In other words, half of the children will receive 5-days of antibiotics and the other half will receive 10-days of antibiotics. Children in this study (and their caregivers) will not know how many days of antibiotics they will receive to cure their infection because some children will take a placebo (or a pill without antibiotics in it). Only the pharmacy will know if a child is getting antibiotic or placebo (for days 6-10 of treatment). During the first phase of the trial (feasibility phase), 4 hospitals will enroll children in the study. We plan on enrolling 50 patients during this phase. We are starting with just 4 hospitals, so our study team can create and update our study plans if needed. We will closely review information about how many patients and families agree to participate, and if they have any trouble completing any part of the study. We will also interview families to understand the choice to participate in the study, the choice not to participate in the study, and what it is like to be in the study. During the second study phase, we will enroll 1150 more patients across all 11 hospitals. Families will complete short, daily surveys until the 15th day after they started antibiotics, then a larger survey at day 15, at day 20, and at day 30. These surveys will ask about the child's symptoms and recovery from their illness, how the antibiotics are making them feel, and if they had to go back to their doctor, emergency room, or hospital. The answers to these questions will be combined to measure how well the child did, balancing feeling better and having bad effects from the antibiotics. We will use mathematical tests to determine which antibiotic duration is better for treating these illnesses. We will complete other mathematical tests to see if all children should receive the same length of antibiotics or if certain children should be prescribed shorter courses and others longer courses.

BPL-1357 for Flu

18 - 55
All Sexes
Bethesda, MD

Background: Influenza (flu) infections are a serious global health threat. Each year, between 3 and 5 million people get the flu, and up to 500,000 die from it. Current vaccines protect against seasonal flus, but broader vaccines are needed to protect against potential flu pandemics. Objective: To test an experimental flu vaccine. Eligibility: Healthy people aged 18 to 55 years. Design: The study will last 5 to 8 months and has 2 phases, A and B. The study vaccine will be given either as a shot in the arm or as a nasal spray. Participants will receive 1 of 3 combinations: (1) study vaccine in the nose and placebo in the arm; (2) placebo in the nose and study vaccine in the arm; or (3) placebo in the nose and placebo in the arm. A placebo is just like the real vaccine but contains no active ingredients. Phase A: Participants will have 5 clinic visits over 56 days. They will receive a shot and a nasal spray at 2 of the visits, 28 days apart. At each visit, they will have a physical exam, with tests of their blood, urine, and nasal secretions. They will check their temperature at home and record any symptoms for 7 days after each vaccine. Phase B: Participants will stay in the hospital for at least 9 days. They will be infected with a flu virus. They will provide blood, urine, and nasal fluid samples. They will have tests of their heart function. They will remain in the hospital until they test negative for the flu 2 days in a row. They will have 2 follow-up visits, 4 and 8 weeks after leaving the hospital.
