What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if a ketogenic diet maintains muscle function and health better than a standard diet in hospitalized pneumonia patients. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a ketogenic diet, high in fats and low in carbohydrates, or a standard diet following USDA guidelines, which includes more carbohydrates and low-fat foods. The trial seeks individuals aged 55 and older with bacterial pneumonia who expect to remain in the hospital for at least 10 days. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to important research that could enhance dietary recommendations for pneumonia patients.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Research has shown that ketogenic diets are generally safe for many people. An initial study found this type of diet to be practical, safe, and easy for participants to follow. It led to ketosis, a natural process where the body burns fat for energy, in all participants.

Another study suggested that ketogenic diets can help reduce inflammation, stabilize the body's energy use, and maintain muscle strength in older adults. These findings provide encouraging safety information for those considering joining a clinical trial involving a ketogenic diet.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the ketogenic diet for pneumonia because it offers a unique approach compared to standard treatments like antibiotics and supportive care. Most treatments for pneumonia focus on killing bacteria or viruses and supporting lung function, but the ketogenic diet works differently by altering the body's metabolism. By significantly reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing fats, this diet may help reduce inflammation and support the immune system in a novel way. This approach could provide an additional tool for managing pneumonia, especially in cases where traditional treatments are less effective.

What evidence suggests that a ketogenic diet might be an effective treatment for pneumonia?

Research has shown that a ketogenic diet might help reduce inflammation and stabilize metabolism in people with pneumonia. In this trial, participants will join either a ketogenic feeding group or a standard feeding group. One study found that a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, like the ketogenic diet, can decrease inflammation caused by infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia. Early evidence also suggests that this diet helps older patients maintain muscle function. Thus, a ketogenic diet could help pneumonia patients stay healthier compared to a standard diet.13678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

The KARMA-P trial is for patients aged 55 or older who have bacterial community-acquired pneumonia and are expected to stay in the hospital for at least 10 days. Participants must be able to eat by mouth and willing to be randomly assigned to a treatment group as well as follow all study procedures.
