What is Nitropress

NitroprussideThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryNitroprusside is a drug that is injected into the veins to help lower blood pressure. It works by releasing nitric oxide, a naturally occurring chemical, which widens the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing pressure in the arteries. Nitroprusside is used in emergencies to quickly lower high blood pressure.

Effectiveness

How Nitropress Affects PatientsNitroprusside relaxes the muscle in the walls of blood vessels, causing them to widen. It is more effective on veins than arteries and does not affect other muscles in the body, such as those in the uterus or duodenum.
How Nitropress works in the bodySodium nitroprusside breaks down in the body to form cyanide, which binds to cytochromes and ferric iron. It also releases nitric oxide, which relaxes the walls of your blood vessels and causes them to widen. This widens your blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. The cyanide is cleared from your body when it binds to methemoglobin and then reacts with thiosulfate to form thiocyanate, which is eliminated through urine.

When to interrupt dosage

The prescribed amount of Nitropress is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, including initiation of Intraoperative Hypotension, Hypertensive crisis and Intraoperative Blood Loss. The measure of dosage is contingent upon the method of administration specified in the following table.

There are 20 known major drug interactions with Nitropress.
Common Nitropress Drug Interactions
Drug Name
Risk Level
Description
Amifostine
Major
Nitroprusside may increase the hypotensive activities of Amifostine.
Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate
Major
Nitroprusside can cause a decrease in the absorption of Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.
3-Aza-2,3-Dihydrogeranyl Diphosphate
Minor
Nitroprusside can cause a decrease in the absorption of 3-Aza-2,3-Dihydrogeranyl Diphosphate resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.
Abacavir
Minor
Nitroprusside may decrease the excretion rate of Abacavir which could result in a higher serum level.
Acebutolol
Minor
Nitroprusside may increase the hypotensive activities of Acebutolol.
Nitropress Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking too much nitroprusside can lead to dangerously low blood pressure, cyanide poisoning, or thiocyanate poisoning. The lethal dose of nitroprusside in rabbits, dogs, mice, and rats is 2.8, 5.0, 8.4, and 11.2 mg/kg, respectively.
