How Natrecor Affects PatientsNesiritide helps keep the cardiovascular system in balance by decreasing the activity of the hormones (renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system) that regulate blood pressure. This helps to widen blood vessels, decrease sodium levels, and increase urine production.
How Natrecor works in the bodyNesiritide works by binding to special receptors on the walls of blood vessels. This increases the amount of a substance called cyclic GMP, which causes the vessels to relax and let more blood flow through. In studies with people who have heart failure, nesiritide has been shown to reduce the pressure in their lungs and in their arteries. It does not seem to affect the strength of their heart contractions or alter their heart rate. We don't know yet if nesiritide affects how much fluid passes through blood vessels, like a similar peptide (ANP) does.
