How Nascobal Affects Patients

Cyanocobalamin, or vitamin B12, is used to treat a deficiency of this vitamin, which can cause various symptoms such as anemia, gastrointestinal issues, and neurological damage. It helps with cell growth, reproduction, and metabolism of fat, carbohydrates, and proteins. Parenteral administration of vitamin B12 quickly and completely reverses the symptoms of deficiency. Intranasal doses given daily for 8 weeks have been shown to restore levels of vitamin B12 to the target therapeutic range.

How Nascobal works in the body

Vitamin B12 is essential for the body's ability to create new cells, proteins, and hormones. It helps convert homocysteine into methionine, which donates methyl groups to other molecules. Without vitamin B12, your body can't regenerate folic acid, leading to anemia. Vitamin B12 also helps create succinyl-CoA, which is needed for fat and protein metabolism. A deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to neurological symptoms, as well as megaloblastic anemia.

Nascobal Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Vitamin B12 is generally safe, even in high doses. In some cases, people have experienced mild diarrhea, itchy skin, swelling, breathing difficulties, and even death. It is not known to cause cancer. No negative effects have been reported in pregnant or breastfeeding women when taking the normal daily requirement of Vitamin B12. For pregnant women using the nasal spray form of Vitamin B12, it is not yet known if it can cause harm or affect the baby.

Nascobal for Prevention of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

I had gastric bypass surgery six months ago. My doctor prescribed this medication to me to prevent B-12 deficiency, and I took it for two months before deciding that I didn't think it was doing anything extraordinary for me so I stopped taking it. However, I continued taking my complete regiment of bariatric vitamins. Shortly after, I believe as a result of not taking the medication, I became fatigued, had poor short term memory, confusion and anxiety. So don't make the same mistake I did - follow the dosing instructions carefully.

Nascobal for Anemia caused by Vitamin B12 Deficiency-Pernicious Anemia

I was prescribed nascobal 500mcg spray 2.3 ml (8-week dose) for Pernicious anemia. I refilled the prescription but was given 1.3 ml (4-week dose) for the same price (after insurance). When I asked the pharmacist about it I was told that the manufacturer had changed the amount sold from 2.3 to 1.3 and the insurance company paid out the same no matter the amount. So, now I have to pay double for what I need.
