Naphazoline is a drug that helps reduce congestion in the nose and eyes. It works by stimulating the blood vessels in these areas, causing them to become narrower and reduce the swelling.

How Naphcon Forte works in the body

Naphazoline works by sending signals to your blood vessels to make them narrower. This reduces congestion in the area where it is used. The drug also triggers the release of a chemical called norepinephrine, which helps keep the blood vessels narrow. However, using it for a long time can cause a rebound reaction, where the blood vessels widen. This can lead to rhinitis medicamentosa when the drug is stopped.

Naphcon Forte Toxicity & Overdose Risk

When taken in large amounts or ingested, naphazoline can cause drowsiness and even coma and death, especially in children under 6. Long-term use of naphazoline can lead to a rebound effect where the body becomes dependent on the drug. It is not known how safe or effective naphazoline is for children under 12, elderly patients, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or its effect on fertility.
