How Myfortic Affects Patients
Mycophenolic acid is used to block the production of certain molecules in the body such as lymphocytes, which can help suppress DNA synthesis and cytokine production. Taking this drug can also put patients at a higher risk of developing infections, blood issues, gastrointestinal complications, and other malignancies. Mycophenolic acid should be avoided in patients with rare hereditary conditions and should not be taken with live attenuated vaccines or donated in blood or semen. The tablet form of the drug is designed to reduce the chances of developing upper gastrointestinal side effects.
How Myfortic works in the body
Mycophenolic acid stops T- and B-lymphocytes from reproducing. This is done by blocking the conversion of certain molecules, which interferes with the process of making new purines, which T- and B-lymphocytes rely on. Additionally, it stops antibodies from forming, and prevents glycoproteins in T- and B-lymphocytes from sticking to endothelial cells.

Myfortic Toxicity & Overdose Risk
There have been cases of people taking too much mycophenolic acid, although not everyone experiences negative side effects. Some people have reported a weakened immune system, blood disorders, and abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and indigestion. Studies have shown that mycophenolic acid does not cause tumors in rats or mice. High doses of up to 18 mg/kg for males and 20 mg/kg for females had no effect on fertility. The toxic dose in rats is 352 mg/kg, and in mice is 1000 mg/kg.
