Treatment Summary

Ibuprofen is a common pain reliever that was first developed in 1960 as a safer alternative to aspirin. It was officially patented in 1961 and became available for use in the UK in 1969 and the US in 1974. Ibuprofen is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is usually sold as a racemic mixture. The S-enantiomer of ibuprofen is believed to be more effective at reducing pain than the R-enantiomer.

Effectiveness

How Motrin Affects Patients

Ibuprofen is used to reduce pain, fever and inflammation. It works by blocking the substances that cause these issues (prostanoids) from being produced by the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. It also helps to reduce swelling, and has been found to increase beta-endorphin levels in the blood. Ibuprofen is commonly used to treat dysmenorrhea, migraines, and joint pain, and has been found to reduce neurodegeneration when taken in low doses over a long period of time. It has also been linked to a decrease in the rate of breast cancer by 50

How Motrin works in the body

Ibuprofen works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase, which is involved in making substances that cause pain and fever. Ibuprofen is a non-selective inhibitor, meaning it blocks both COX-1 and COX-2. Blocking COX-2 reduces the production of prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain, fever, and swelling. Blocking COX-1 can cause side effects like stomach ulcers.

When to interrupt dosage

The advocated dosage of Motrin is contingent upon the indicated condition, such as smooth muscle relaxation prior to radiological procedures, Catarrh and Pain relief. The amount of dosage is contingent upon the mode of delivery (e.g. Kit - Oral; Topical or Tablet) listed in the table hereunder.

Motrin for Minor Musculoskeletal Injury

I was surprised at how quickly Motrin took effect. I only needed to take one gel capsule and, 12 hours later, I'm still feeling a bit groggy but that's a small price to pay for its efficacy.

Patient Q&A Section about motrin

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Is Motrin the same as ibuprofen or Tylenol?

"Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve are all pain relievers that can be found on drugstore shelves. The active ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen, while the active ingredient in both Advil and Motrin is ibuprofen. The active ingredient in Aleve is naproxen."

Answered by AI

Is Motrin & Tylenol the same?

"The two drugs have different active ingredients and thus belong to different drug classes. Tylenol is an analgesic that relieves pain, and it is also an antipyretic, which means it reduces fever. Motrin, on the other hand, is an NSAID, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Both drugs can cause nausea, stomach pain, skin itching or rash, and headache, among other side effects."

Answered by AI

What is a Motrin used for?

"MOTRIN® is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and contains ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is used to relieve pain and reduce fever. Adult MOTRIN® IB products contain 200 milligrams of ibuprofen and are available as tablets or Liquid Gels (liquid-filled capsules)."

Answered by AI

Is ibuprofen and Motrin the same thing?

"Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is also known as Advil or Motrin. Other members of this drug class include aspirin and naproxen (Aleve)."

Pain Medicines for Period Pain in Crohn's Disease

18 - 44
Female
Chapel Hill, NC

The purpose of this pilot study is to prepare for a larger study that will compare the effectiveness and safety of two common pain medications, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, to help treat period cramps in women with Crohn's disease. The goal of this study is to identify any challenges in running a larger study. The investigators will track how many people sign up for the study, how well participants follow the study plan, how many people stay in the study, and whether they are able to complete all the study activities, such as taking the medication, submitting samples, and filling out surveys. During the study, participants will undergo a screening visit that includes a blood draw, physical exam, pregnancy test, stool testing, and complete surveys about Crohn's disease and menstrual cycles. Once this visit is complete, the rest of the study will occur at home. Participants will be assigned to take either ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help treat period cramps for four menstrual cycles in a row. Participants will take ibuprofen for two cycles and acetaminophen for two cycles. Participants will know which medication is being taken at any given time, but the order in which they take the medications will be randomly assigned. Before each menstrual cycle, participants will submit a stool sample and fill out a short (\<1 minute) electronic survey. When participants develop period cramps, they will take the assigned medication for three days and fill out short (\<1 minute) electronic surveys about their cramps. After participants finish taking the medication for three days, they will submit another stool sample and fill out two more short (\<1 minute) electronic surveys. After have completing this process for four menstrual cycles, a remote interview with a researcher to give feedback on the study will be conducted.

SBS-147 Safety Study

18 - 55
All Sexes
Cypress, CA

This study is part of the HEAL Initiative supported by the NIH. The purpose of this study is to learn how safe the study drug, SBS-147, is and how people's bodies respond to and process it. Researchers will also look for any side effects that may occur when taking SBS-147. Some participants will receive SBS-147, and others will receive a placebo, which looks the same but does not contain any medicine. This helps researchers fairly compare results. The study includes two parts: Single-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo one time. Multiple-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo once or twice daily for 7 days.

Oxygen Concentration for Premature Birth

No minimum age - 10
All Sexes
Edmonton, Canada

This study is aims to examine the best amount of oxygen to give preterm babies (born between 32 and 35 weeks) right after birth. In the past, doctors used high levels of oxygen, but research has shown that using lower levels might help reduce the risk of death in full-term babies without harming brain development. However, investigators don't know the best oxygen level for babies born a little early (32 to 35 weeks). Some early data suggests that giving lower oxygen levels (FiO2 0.3) may not help babies reach healthy oxygen levels by 5 minutes after birth. This study will compare two oxygen levels-FiO2 0.6 and FiO2 0.3 to see which helps babies breathe better and need less ongoing breathing support. Researchers will study over 1,500 babies in hospitals across Alberta, Canada, to find the safest approach for these babies.
