Effectiveness

How Fansidar Affects PatientsPyrimethamine is an antiparasitic drug used to treat malaria. It works by blocking the growth of malaria parasites and Toxoplasma gondii, a type of parasite that uses folic acid. It can destroy the parasites that cause malaria, but does not kill the gametocytes, or the cells that help the parasite spread to other people. When taken with other drugs, such as sulfonamides, it becomes more effective.
How Fansidar works in the bodyPyrimethamine stops the growth of malaria-causing parasites by blocking their ability to make DNA. By doing so, it prevents the parasites from multiplying and invading more cells in the body.

Fansidar for Prevention of Falciparum Malaria that is Resistant to Chloroquine
My partner died after only three weeks of taking this medication. He developed TEN (toxic epidermal necrolysis) and his doctor failed to take him off the drug even after he reported a skin rash. Do not use this medication.
