Effectiveness
How Casodex Affects PatientsBicalutamide is a medicine used to treat prostate cancer. It is a nonsteroidal anti-androgen, meaning it blocks the action of male hormones (androgens) that stimulate the growth of prostate tissue, both normal and cancerous. Prostate cancer is largely affected by androgens, and can be treated with surgery or drugs that lower androgen levels. Bicalutamide is sometimes used as a single treatment, but it has not been proven to be as effective as reducing androgen levels.
How Casodex works in the bodyBicalutamide stops male hormones from attaching to cells in the prostate. This prevents these hormones from causing the prostate to grow, both normally and abnormally.

4/4/2012 I've been on this medication for five years and it has done wonders for my prostate cancer. My PSA levels have stayed low, and I attribute a lot of that success to this drug.

11/21/2011 I was in a lot of pain before I started this treatment, and it took a few weeks for the medication to really start working. Even now, I still have periodic knots in my muscle, but it's manageable and doesn't stop me from living my life.
4.7Patient Review
11/26/2014 My husband is taking Casodex as his only treatment option, since he cannot afford the Lupron shots. He's been on it for a while now and it's working well to keep him in remission. We're both very frustrated with how expensive this all is, but thankful that there are options available.
4.7Patient Review
1/16/2014 I experienced a total loss of sexual stimulation while taking this medication. I'm not sure if the effects are reversible after stopping the medication.
4.3Patient Review

4.3Patient Review
12/26/2015 I've been on this treatment for almost two years now, and it has definitely lowered my PSA levels. However, I have experienced extreme fatigue, breast tenderness, and hair loss in the first six months. These side effects are tolerable now, but they were definitely a struggle at first.
4Patient Review
10/10/2013 Casodex has been working well for me so far. After four months of taking it, my PSA levels dropped from 10.7 to 3.1 and then down to 3.0 two weeks later. The only side effects I've experienced are some breast tenderness and swelling, as well as a decrease in ejaculate volume; but none of these have been too bad.
4Patient Review
6/26/2013 I experienced dizziness, nausea, and swelling in my legs. I also lost my appetite and became constipated.

2.3Patient Review
6/26/2013 I've been taking this medication for six weeks now and have had trouble sleeping as well as severe itching all over my body. Additionally, my breasts are tender to the touch and my feet and ankles swell so badly that I can hardly get shoes on some days.
