Treatment Summary

Caffeine is a drug used in many forms, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and certain cosmetics. It is also used to treat respiratory conditions of premature babies, reduce pain, and combat drowsiness. Caffeine can be taken orally, injected, or inhaled. In 1999, the FDA approved the use of caffeine injections to treat apnea in premature babies. This condition can cause asthma or emphysema in the long term, but caffeine injections can help improve the quality of life of premature infants.

Effectiveness

How Caffeine Affects Patients

Caffeine helps you stay alert and can make you feel jittery. It also helps relax smooth muscle, increases the strength of heart muscle contractions, and can help with physical performance. Caffeine boosts the production of stomach acid and helps with digestion. It is often combined with medicines for headaches, like migraines, to help relieve symptoms. Lastly, caffeine can make you need to go to the bathroom more often.

How Caffeine works in the body

Caffeine's effects on the body are complex, though its main action is blocking the adenosine receptors. This increases alertness and fights drowsiness. Caffeine also increases lipolysis, stimulates the respiratory center in the brain, increases renal blood flow and sodium excretion, and causes vasodilation in the blood vessels. In the heart, it has both inotropic and chronotropic effects, raising systolic blood pressure by 5 to 10 mmHg. Caffeine is also beneficial for headaches, which are caused by vasodilation in the brain.

When to interrupt dosage

The recommended measure of Caffeine is contingent upon the diagnosed circumstance, including Overdose, Drug, Catarrh and Athletic Performance. The amount of dosage shifts, according to the method of delivery (e.g. Tablet or Tablet - Oral) enumerated in the table hereunder.

Caffeine Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The toxic dose of caffeine for rats is 192mg/kg. An extremely high amount of caffeine for humans would be about 10-14 grams (150-200mg/kg of body weight). Overdosing on caffeine can cause seizures, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues. It can also cause restlessness, agitation, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, tremors, and in some cases death. For mild overdose, offer symptomatic treatment. For severe overdose, intubation may be necessary to protect the airway, as well as activated charcoal and hemodialysis to prevent further absorption and metabolism. Additionally, benzod

Caffeine Reviews: What are patients saying about Caffeine?

Caffeine for Drowsiness

Coffee is one of my favorite things. It's great in the morning, but I do notice that the effects don't last very long and I often feel worse when it wears off.

Caffeine for Low Energy

Caffeine is a big part of many Americans' mornings, including my own for years. However, overuse of caffeine led to health problems for me, specifically Acid Reflux (GERD). My symptoms were rare but became commonplace with persistent use and included vomiting, nautiousness, gas (excessive burping), nervous twitching, and depression/anxiety. I'm not telling you to stop using caffeine entirely, but be more mindful of its effects and limiting your intake.

18 - 55
All Sexes
Cypress, CA

This study is part of the HEAL Initiative supported by the NIH. The purpose of this study is to learn how safe the study drug, SBS-147, is and how people's bodies respond to and process it. Researchers will also look for any side effects that may occur when taking SBS-147. Some participants will receive SBS-147, and others will receive a placebo, which looks the same but does not contain any medicine. This helps researchers fairly compare results. The study includes two parts: Single-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo one time. App-based Breathing Program for Migraine

18+
All Sexes
Phoenix, AZ

Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders, characterized by recurrent headaches, sensitivity to light and movement, nausea, and autonomic dysregulation. Although mind-body interventions like biofeedback have shown their efficacy, they remain underutilized due to barriers such as transportation, time constraints, lack of awareness, stigma, and cost. A targeted approach to enhancing HRV is HRV biofeedback (HRVB), a technique using visual or auditory feedback to help people regulate HRV through slow-paced breathing and positive emotional regulation to promote ANS balance and emotional resilience. Investigators will conduct a remotely delivered pilot RCT of an 8-week, 10 min/day, novel app-based HRVB intervention compared to a sham control intervention (matching intervention time and attention with no biofeedback component) in adult with chronic migraine. Investigators hypothesize data collected from the study will: a) support the feasibility and acceptability of the remotely delivered app-based HRVB intervention among adults with chronic migraine, and b) provide insights into refining the intervention by examining patterns of change in migraine and psychological outcomes from pre- to post-intervention.

18+
All Sexes
Miami, FL

The goal of this study is to learn about the safety of Niagen®Plus, an injectable form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), and to see how it affects levels of NAD+ in the blood. Niagen®Plus will be given either by subcutaneous (under the skin) or intramuscular (into the muscle) injection at two dose levels (50 mg or 100 mg). The main questions this study aims to answer are: Is Niagen®Plus safe and well-tolerated when given by injection several times over 100 days? How do NAD+ levels in blood change after repeated doses of Niagen®Plus? What are participants' and clinicians' experiences with the injections? Researchers will also look at changes in fatigue, sleep, quality of life, inflammation markers, mitochondrial efficiency, and perceived skin appearance. Participants will: Receive three injections in clinic on Days 1-3, followed by a Day 10 follow-up visit Self-inject Niagen®Plus at home three times per week from Days 10-100 Return to the clinic on Days 40 and 100 for safety and laboratory testing Complete short surveys about fatigue, sleep, and overall well-being throughout the study The study will include 40 generally healthy adults and will last about 100 days per participant.
