Effectiveness

How Arestin Affects Patients

Minocycline is an antibiotic that stops bacteria from making proteins needed for them to survive. It is usually taken 2-4 times a day, so it does not last very long. It should not be taken more than 400mg in 24 hours. People should be aware of the potential risks associated with taking minocycline, such as problems with teeth and bone development, inflammation of the colon, side effects on the central nervous system, and swelling of the brain.

How Arestin works in the body

Tetracyclines enter bacteria by attaching to metal ions like magnesium. This allows the medicine to enter the bacteria's outer membrane and dissolve, allowing it to pass into the cytoplasm. Once inside, tetracyclines prevent proteins from being formed, stopping the bacteria from reproducing.

When to interrupt dosage

The quantity of Arestin is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, including Periodontitis, Rickettsialpox and Lymphogranuloma Venereum. The amount of dosage is contingent upon the technique of delivery (e.g. Capsule, extended release or Tablet, film coated, extended release) noted in the following table.

Arestin for Inflammation of the Tissues Surrounding a Tooth

I'm not sure if this medication has helped with my periodontal disease after one month. Three of my teeth have become discolored at the root, and I haven't changed anything about my home dental care. Going in to get them checked soon, but I'm worried the doctors will say it's not from the treatment when I can't think of any other reason for it to be happening.

Even after taking this antibiotic for the full 21 days, I found it to be quite strong. I experienced muscle and tendon pain, gum inflammation, and even got a sunburn while walking in the shade. My dentist didn't give me any information on potential side effects, which I think is terrible.

Arestin for Inflammation of the Tissues Surrounding a Tooth

I told the hygienist that I was sensitive to tetracycline- she said it would not enter the blood stream - I have been physically ill since this treatment- 1 week ago- I have referred pain (on the opposite side of my mouth)- I feel sick to my stomach- She said I am not swollen or sore around the site, so it is not a reaction to this. I strongly disagree- it says "Aresti should not be used in any patient with a known sensitivity to tetracycline.

Patient Q&A Section about arestin

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is ARESTIN used for?

"ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl) Microspheres, 1mg is used in combination with Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) to treat patients with adult periodontitis (gum disease). ARESTIN® can be used as part of an overall oral health program that includes good brushing and flossing habits, as well as SRP."

Answered by AI

Is ARESTIN necessary?

"Medicating patients who don't need it is unnecessary for most patients as they typically respond well to non-surgical methods that don't involve antibiotics. This goes against the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for appropriate antibiotic use."

Answered by AI

What is a dental ARESTIN?

"Arestin is a dental antibiotic which is placed directly into infected gum pockets by a professional after a scaling and root planing procedure. Arestin is more effective than root planing alone in fighting against harmful bacteria."

Answered by AI

How long does ARESTIN last for?

"Arestin starts working quickly, right at the source of infection and keeps fighting bacteria long after you leave the dental office. Arestin fights infection and inflammation for 30 days and provides significantly better results than scaling and root planing alone for up to 90 days."

BLTR vs B-RAP for Trichiasis

18+
All Sexes
Chapel Hill, NC

The primary objective of this randomized clinical trial is to determine whether repeat trichiasis surgery performed with Bevel-Rotate Advancement Procedure (B-RAP) improves surgical success compared to Bilamellar Tarsal Rotation (BLTR) among a group of 8-10 TT surgeons in Tanzania. The study aims to enroll 1,000 individuals with PTT. The primary outcome is repeat PTT within one year after surgery. Additionally, the study will assess eyelid contour abnormalities and how they change over a two-year period as well as patient reported outcomes. If this project is successful in improving surgical outcomes, it could change the approach to treating PTT globally. Individuals with trichiasis have a significantly reduced quality of life; correcting their trichiasis long-term has the potential to improve their quality of life and their family members' quality of life considerably.

Dental Care for Pneumonia Prevention

60 - 100
All Sexes
Jefferson City, MO

The goal of this study is to learn if dental infection control treatment delivered to older adult nursing home residents at their place of residence will result in : * improved dental health * reduced risk of pneumonia * better glucose control for diabetic patients compared to the pre-project dental and general health evaluations of residents and the pre-project facility incidence of pneumonia. Dental infection control treatment includes treating gum infections, stopping or slowing decay with fluoride, and assisting residents with effective tooth brushing and denture cleaning daily. Previous studies indicate dental infections can be inhaled and cause pneumonia or make diabetes worse. A shortage of dentists has limited care for nursing home residents. This project will allow dental hygienists and specially trained dental assistants to treat nursing home residents using telehealth methods (computers, cameras, internet, and telephone) to talk and work with dentists in different locations.

Antibiotics for Gum Disease

18+
All Sexes
Birmingham, AL

Periodontitis is a bacterial inflammatory disease and antibiotic use is being empirically used as part of its treatment. However, a clinical practice guideline on periodontal treatment adjuncts published in 2015 identified weak evidence on the use of systemic antibiotics and large heterogeneity across small scale studies, suggesting that larger pragmatic clinical trials would benefit clinical decision making. This will be a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, stratified by practice and practitioner. The study will investigate the effectiveness of adjunctive antibiotics as adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) compared to SRP with placebo for the treatment of generalized stage II-III, grades A-C periodontitis in patient participants from National Dental PBRN practices. Periodontal data will be collected at baseline, re-evaluation (6 weeks), and final (4-12 months) study visits. Changes in periodontal clinical and patient-reported outcomes will be assessed to determine the effectiveness of SRP plus adjunctive systemic Amoxicillin / Metronidazole antibiotics (AMXM) versus SRP with Placebo.
