Effectiveness

How Verelan Affects PatientsVerapamil is a medicine used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, chest pain, and high blood pressure. It works by blocking calcium from entering the cells of the heart and blood vessels, which helps to reduce their activity. Short-acting versions of verapamil need to be taken 3-4 times a day, but there are extended-release versions that can be taken once a day. People with weakened hearts or thickened heart muscles should not take verapamil as it can worsen their condition.
How Verelan works in the bodyVerapamil works by blocking certain calcium channels in the body. These channels, when open, allow for the contraction of muscles and the electrical signals necessary for the heart's pacemaker. By blocking these channels, verapamil reduces the contraction of blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and reducing the force against which the heart has to push. It also slows the electrical activity of the AV node, reducing heart rate. Verapamil may also target other calcium channels, potassium channels, and adrenergic receptors, but its exact mechanism of action in treating cluster headaches is unclear.

Verelan Toxicity & Overdose RiskThe lowest toxic dose of verapamil for women is 14.4mg/kg and for men is 3.429mg/kg, while the highest toxic dose for rats is 150mg/kg and for mice is 163mg/kg. If someone overdoses on verapamil, there is no specific antidote, so treatment is mainly supportive. Symptoms of overdose usually include low blood pressure, slow heart rate, and abnormal heart rhythm, but there have been cases of fluid buildup in the lungs after taking very large doses (up to 9 grams). In cases of acute overdose, treatments may include drugs to empty the stomach, drugs to
