Treatment SummaryHistrelin is a long-acting medication used to reduce the body’s production of hormones that control fertility. When used in children, it can help delay or prevent early puberty. In adults, it can be used to treat advanced prostate cancer. Histrelin works by stimulating the pituitary gland to produce a temporary increase in hormones like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. This is followed by a decrease in these hormones due to a decrease in the sensitivity of the pituitary gland to histrelin. Histrelin is available under the brand names Supprelin LA and Vantas.

How Vantas Affects PatientsHistrelin is a medicine used to suppress hormones in the body, which can help slow down puberty in children. It cannot be taken orally and is available as two different products, Vantas and Supprelin LA. Taking this medicine can cause a transient increase in certain hormones for the first week of treatment, such as estradiol in women and testosterone in both sexes. How Vantas works in the bodyHistrelin is a hormone-blocking drug. When used as an implant, it is released in the body in continual doses. At first, it increases the hormones that control sexual maturity and reproduction (like testosterone). But over time, it desensitizes the receptors that detect these hormones, reducing the levels of these hormones in the body. In children, it lowers the hormones that stimulate puberty, allowing them to remain at a normal height. In adults with prostate cancer, it stops the production of testosterone, preventing the cancer cells from growing.

Vantas Toxicity & Overdose RiskStudies on animals show no signs of serious toxicity when they were injected with up to 200 mcg/kg (rats and rabbits) or 2000 mcg/kg (mice) of histrelin acetate. This amount is much higher than the recommended maximum dose for humans of 10 mcg/kg/day. In clinical trials, no cases of overdose were reported. If an accidental or intentional overdose were to occur, it is unlikely due to the constant delivery of histrelin from the implants.
