Diethylstilbestrol is a man-made hormone that is similar to the female hormone estrogen. In 1971, the FDA warned doctors not to give it to pregnant women since it was linked to a cancer that can develop in daughters of women who used this drug while pregnant.
How Stilbestrol works in the body
Estrogens work by entering target cells and binding to a protein receptor called the estrogen receptor. These target cells can be found in the reproductive tract, mammary gland, hypothalamus and pituitary. Estrogen binding to these receptors affects the liver's production of proteins like sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), as well as suppressing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). When combined with a progestin, estrogen can reduce the levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is secreted by the hypothalamus and pituitary.
