What is Slynd
Drospirenone
The Generic name of this drug
Treatment Summary
Drospirenone is a synthetic hormone used in combination with another hormone, called estetrol, as an oral contraceptive. It is also used with estrogen to control acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). There have been safety concerns that the use of drospirenone may increase the risk of venous thromboembolism, however, studies have been conflicting. The FDA concluded that the risk of thromboembolism is still lower than the risk during pregnancy or after giving birth.

How Slynd Affects Patients
Drospirenone is an oral contraceptive that prevents pregnancy by stopping the maturation of follicles and ovulation. It also has anti-androgen effects, which can help improve acne and hirsutism. When taken with ethinyl estradiol, it has been shown to positively affect cholesterol levels. Due to its similarity to natural progesterone, drospirenone is thought to cause fewer side effects than other progesterone contraceptives, such as breast tenderness and mood swings. However, it may increase the risk of venous thromboembolism and cardiovascular events, and smokers or women aged 35 or older are
How Slynd works in the body
Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol work together to prevent pregnancy. They do this by blocking the hormones that trigger ovulation, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg. Drospirenone also has anti-androgenic effects, which means it stops dihydrotestosterone from binding to its receptor and reduces the amount of androgens produced in the ovaries. This helps to treat acne and hirsutism, as well as reducing edema in the sebaceous follicles.
When to interrupt dosage
