Effectiveness

How Prepopik Affects Patients

Sodium picosulfate is a type of medicine that helps to stimulate the bowels and make it easier to have a bowel movement. A study involving people having a colonoscopy found that over 93% of those taking sodium picosulfate with magnesium citrate reported that the medicine was effective in helping them have a successful bowel movement.

How Prepopik works in the body

Picosulfuric acid, in the form of sodium picosulfate, helps people have bowel movements by preventing the body from absorbing too much water from the intestines. It is broken down by bacteria in the colon to make a substance that stimulates the colon walls and increases peristalsis, or the motion of the bowels.

When to interrupt dosage

The proposed dosage of Prepopik is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, such as Gastrointestinal tract structure, Postoperative and Immobility. The degree of dosage deviates, depending on the administration course of action (e.g. Powder, for solution or Powder, metered) given in the table beneath.

Prepopik Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Overdosing on laxatives containing sodium picosulfate can cause dangerous imbalances in electrolytes, dehydration, and low blood volume. Signs of these problems should be monitored if an overdose occurs, and treatment should be given to alleviate symptoms. In laboratory studies, extremely high doses of sodium picosulfate have been found to damage liver cells and lower the activity of rapidly growing cells.

Prepopik for Emptying of the Bowel

I've had five colonoscopies in total, and this was the first time I used Prepopik. It worked more slowly than other preps I've tried, but it did the job well enough that my GI didn't make me go through with another procedure.

Prepopik for Emptying of the Bowel

I followed the directions to a tee, and experienced almost constant diarrhea. The taste was incredibly unpleasant. I was nauseous the entire time and couldn't get any sleep. Four days later, I'm still feeling nauseous. This upset the balance of my system and was much harsher than other colonoscopy preps I've taken.

I took this preparation for a colonoscopy as directed, but unfortunately it resulted in several hours of diarrhea starting at 8pm. This made for a very sleepless night and I felt sick by the time of my procedure. I would look into other options next time.

Prepopik for Emptying of the Bowel

Caused me to feel sick halfway through the preparation process. This only got worse overnight and, by the time I was admitted for my colonoscopy, I needed medication to stop the nausea. Unfortunately, even that didn't work and I ended up throwing up in the car on the way there.

Patient Q&A Section about prepopik

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

How do you take Prepopik?

"The following instructions are for ONE (1) dose only.

Fill a dosing cup with cold water up to the lower (5-ounce) line. Add the contents of ONE (1) packet and stir for 2-3 minutes until dissolved. Drink the entire contents. Follow with FIVE (5) 8-ounce drinks of clear liquid, taken at your own pace within."

Answered by AI

Is Prepopik still available?

"Prepopik is no longer available. In order to prepare for a colonoscopy, you will need to take two doses (two 160 mL bottles). The first dose should be taken the evening before the colonoscopy, and the second dose should be taken the next morning, before the colonoscopy."

Answered by AI

What is Prepopik used for?

"Prepopik is a prescription medicine used as part of a colonoscopy. It may be used alone or with other medications. Prepopik belongs to a class of drugs called bowel preps."

Answered by AI

How long does it take Prepopik to work?

"Note: This is not medical advice. Please consult your doctor.

You may feel nauseous, bloated, crampy, and like you need to vomit after taking the first glass of Prepopik. Don't worry if you don't have a bowel movement within the next hour; it may take three to four hours for one to occur."

Stent Omission vs Placement for Kidney Stones

18+
All Sexes
Ann Arbor, MI

The study is being completed to compare patient reported outcomes for stent omission vs. placement after using a ureteral access sheath for uncomplicated ureteroscopy. Participants that consent for the study will complete baseline PRO questionnaires. A UAS will be used during surgery, and the size left to the discretion of the surgeon. At the end of the procedure, the urologist will evaluate the ureter for iatrogenic injury, and the ureter will be graded using the Post Ureteroscopic Lesion Scale (PULS). Patients assessed with PULS 0 and PULS 1 will meet 2nd stage eligibility and will be randomized 1:1 to either stent omission or stent placement. When a stent is placed, the stent type and decision to leave a string (tether) will be at the operating urologist's discretion. Hypothesis: \- stent omission arm will be non-inferior to stent placement in Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pain Interference and Pain Intensity, and have lower 30-day healthcare utilization.

App-based Breathing Program for Migraine

18+
All Sexes
Phoenix, AZ

Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders, characterized by recurrent headaches, sensitivity to light and movement, nausea, and autonomic dysregulation. Although mind-body interventions like biofeedback have shown their efficacy, they remain underutilized due to barriers such as transportation, time constraints, lack of awareness, stigma, and cost. A targeted approach to enhancing HRV is HRV biofeedback (HRVB), a technique using visual or auditory feedback to help people regulate HRV through slow-paced breathing and positive emotional regulation to promote ANS balance and emotional resilience. Investigators will conduct a remotely delivered pilot RCT of an 8-week, 10 min/day, novel app-based HRVB intervention compared to a sham control intervention (matching intervention time and attention with no biofeedback component) in adult with chronic migraine. Investigators hypothesize data collected from the study will: a) support the feasibility and acceptability of the remotely delivered app-based HRVB intervention among adults with chronic migraine, and b) provide insights into refining the intervention by examining patterns of change in migraine and psychological outcomes from pre- to post-intervention.

Intranasal Nerve Block for Headache

18+
All Sexes
Dayton, OH

In patients with bleeding from a brain aneurysm, severe headache is the most common complaint. However, the pain is difficult to treat. The use of standard pain medications is common, but pain control remains poor. Additionally, pain medicines have multiple side effects including sedation, interference with breathing, intestinal cramping, low blood pressure, and the risk of addiction. In the present study, the investigators will examine the use of a medication to block the sphenopalatine ganglion which is a bundle of nerves that includes nerves that cause head pain. This block is performed by spraying numbing medication into the back of the nasal cavity on both sides. This particular pain medication does not have the side effects discussed above. The purpose of the study is to see if this treatment will decrease pain without causing unwanted side effects. All patients in the study will receive standard pain medicine as needed for headache. Information will be collected from the patient's medical chart on the amount of pain medication used and the amount of pain the patient describes having. The average pain will be calculated for the first 24 hours the patient is in the hospital. At that point, the patient will receive pain medication sprayed into the back of the nasal cavity on both sides. Patients will also receive this treatment 3 days later. Following these treatments, information will be obtained on the average amount of pain, and how much other pain medication is used. The investigators will look at the amount of pain and the amount of other pain medicine used over the first 24 hours before the nasal pain medicine treatment and compare it to the time after the treatments to see if the amount of pain decreases and if the amount of other pain medicine needed decreases as well. Six months after discharge, the patient will be contacted by phone to find out more information about how much head pain they had after discharge from the hospital.

Genetic Testing for Kidney Stones

18 - 90
All Sexes
Iowa City, IA

Kidney stones continue to affect more and more people in the United States with the most recent estimate being 1 in 9 people will develop a stone in their life. While family history is a known risk factor for stone disease, it remains unclear whether this is related to learned dietary habits or a truly inheritable genetic condition. Known inheritable genetic conditions linked to stone formation are uncommon, and thus, routine genetic testing is not currently recommended by any major urologic organizations. Patients who form calcium phosphate predominant stones, a less common type of stone composition, tend to have alkaline urine pH which suggests that the kidneys are unable to rid the body of acid. Management of such patients for stone prevention can be difficult. The Iowa Institute for Human Genomics is one of only a handful of commercial labs which offers genetic testing for stone disease. The aim of this study is to assess the rate of genetic abnormalities amongst calcium phosphate predominant stone formers with alkaline urine. To this end, the investigators plan to enroll calcium phosphate predominant stone forming patients with alkaline urine on 24 hour urine collection who obtain their health care at UIHC to undergo free genetic testing via blood draw to assess for genetic abnormalities. The investigators will also collect information already available in the subject's chart to assess for other patterns between blood and urine tests and any genetic variants.

Bupivacaine Injection for Headache

18+
All Sexes
Gainesville, FL

Headache is a frequent chief complaint among patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED), accounting for 2.1 million visits annually in the United States. Often, individuals resort to ED care only after over-the-counter or home remedies have failed, leading to the predominant use of intravenous (IV) medications in the ED, including NSAIDs, triptans, neuroleptics, antiepileptics, and dopaminergic antagonists. Unfortunately, these pharmacologic treatments frequently induce side effects such as cognitive impairment, extrapyramidal reactions, and the potential for medication dependency. In the ED, patients frequently require concurrent administration of multiple systemic medications to achieve satisfactory pain relief, thereby elevating the risk associated with medication use. Despite these medication regimens, a significant portion of patients continue to experience inadequate pain relief. Consequently, the search for an optimal headache therapy-characterized by rapid and effective pain relief, long lasting results, minimal side effects, and allows for rapid ED patient turnover-continues to be a popular area of research in emergency medicine. The investigators plan to evaluate the use of 0.5% bupivacaine cervical IM injection at the c6-7 location for the treatment of non traumatic headaches using a non-inferiority design, randomized, prospective, open-label, controlled trial comparing it to physicians choice of intravenous medications in treatment of headache in the Emergency Department at North Florida Hospital.

Meditation for Recovery After Kidney Stone Surgery

Any Age
All Sexes
Philadelphia, PA

The goal of this pilot clinical trial is to learn whether meditation can help improve recovery in children and adults having surgery for kidney stones. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Does meditation around the time of surgery improve pain and anxiety in patients undergoing kidney stone surgery (ureteroscopy)? * Is a meditation program around the time of surgery feasible for patients having kidney stone surgery (ureteroscopy)? Participants will be randomly assigned to the meditation group and the control group to understand how meditation affects recovery after surgery. Participants will be asked to: * Complete a health history form * Complete questionnaires about pain and mood before surgery and certain days after surgery * Those in the meditation group will learn and practice a daily 20-minute meditation for 2-4 weeks before surgery and 2 weeks after surgery * Those in the meditation group will be asked to provide feedback of the meditation program after completing the last questionnaire

Post-operative pain and lower urinary tract symptoms are common following ureteroscopy in the treatment of stone disease. The use of bupivacaine as a topical pain medication is used routinely for other urologic procedures, however, to date there are no studies that have rigorously investigated the effect of instilling bupivacaine in the bladder following ureteroscopy. This is a randomized study that will investigate the effect of instilling bupivacaine in the bladder following routine ureteroscopy, laser lithotripsy and ureteral stenting in the treatment of stone disease. Compared to a placebo of Normal Saline, our study hypothesizes that administration of topical bupivacaine in the bladder will decrease post-operative pain and lower urinary tract symptoms while improving quality of life in the early post-operative period.
