What is Periogard

ChlorhexidineThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryChlorhexidine is a powerful antiseptic and antimicrobial drug used to treat infections on the skin and mouth. It is made up of two 4-chlorophenyl rings and two biguanide groups connected by a central hexamethylene chain. Chlorhexidine has the ability to fight off bacteria, viruses, and yeast. It was first developed in the UK in the 1950s and was later brought to the US in the 1970s.

Effectiveness

How Periogard Affects PatientsChlorhexidine is an antimicrobial that can kill both virus, bacteria, and fungus. It's strength depends on the concentration used - lower concentrations slow down the growth of microorganisms, while higher concentrations kill them. Chlorhexidine has the ability to stick to surfaces, such as teeth, which helps it fight off microorganisms. However, this can cause staining of the teeth if used for long periods of time. People with allergies to chlorhexidine may experience anaphylaxis.
How Periogard works in the bodyChlorhexidine works by damaging the cell membranes of bacteria and other microbes. It does this by attaching to the negative charges found in cell membranes. This reaction weakens the cells, allowing their contents to leak out and eventually causing death. Depending on the concentration of chlorhexidine, the action can be either bacteriostatic (slowing down growth) or bactericidal (killing the bacteria).

When to interrupt dosage

The advised dosage of Periogard is contingent upon the determined circumstances, for example Wound, Oral Hygiene and Ringworm. The amount of dosage is contingent upon the method of administration (e.g. Rinse or Cream; Kit; Ointment; Solution) specified in the table below.

Periogard for Inflammation of the Gums
I lost five teeth due to bone loss and gum disease, but this treatment has really helped me keep my gums healthy. I've been using it for a while now and my dentist is always impressed with how healthy my gums are. If I had known about this sooner, I could have prevented the loss of those teeth.

Periogard for Inflammation of the Gums
I found this medication to be very helpful for reducing pain, bleeding and tenderness in my gums. I don't have to use it every day anymore, which is great.

Periogard for Inflammation of the Gums
I've been using this mouth rinse for a little over two days to help with inflammation and sore gums after a dental cleaning. So far, I haven't noticed any difference. Additionally, I have been feeling strange since using it; I have a heavy feeling in my chest that radiates into my stomach. It lasts for a couple hours and is really uncomfortable. Not to mention the horrible taste! I am supposed to use it for another week, but at this point, I'm not sure if I should continue because of how it's making me feel.

Periogard for Inflammation of the Gums
I noticed some marginal improvements in my gum health after using Periogard, but then I started to see stains on my teeth. From that experience, I have stopped using the product.

Periogard for Inflammation of the Gums
PerioGuard toothpaste caused me to develop a really unpleasant dry mouth that nothing could relieve. Once I stopped using the toothpaste, the dry mouth gradually went away and is now totally fine.

Periogard for Inflammation of the Gums
While this oral rinse did help with the bleeding around one tooth, the side effects were not worth it. My tongue was left sore, my mouth dry and I had a persistent metallic taste that lasted for days. If you haven't opened it yet, take it back!

Guided Imagery Therapy for Abdominal Pain

7 - 12
All Sexes
Austin, TX
Chronic abdominal pain is common among children, and the majority of cases are attributed to functional abdominal pain disorders. One approach to treating these disorders is by using psychological therapies. This clinical trial aims to see how well pre-recorded guided imagery therapy sessions help children's abdominal pain when delivered via a mobile application (app) on a smartphone or tablet. Participants will complete a baseline abdominal pain and stooling diary to determine eligibility, as well as other surveys. Eligible participants will be given access to the guided imagery therapy mobile application. This intervention asks participants to listen to a 10- to 15-minute GIT session 5 out of 7 days per week for 8 weeks, in addition to their usual care for their abdominal pain. Then, participants will complete another abdominal pain and stooling diary, along with other psychometric surveys, at the end of this intervention period. Participants will also collect another diary and surveys 3 months post-treatment.

Erector Spinae Plane Block for Pain

21 - 75
All Sexes
Cleveland, OH
As per usual care for spine surgery, participants will have their back cleaned with alcohol and a needle will be placed using ultrasound for the ESP block. Through the needle, a small catheter will be placed in the participants back and the needle removed. Approximately one hour prior to the start of surgery, a numbing medication (ropivacaine, similar to Novocaine) in combination with dexmedetomidine (a pain medicine that is used in nerve block and that is not a narcotic) and contrast dye (iohexol) will be injected through the catheter. Participants will then go through the QST procedure (test of buzzing sensation and temperature sensation through pads applied to their skin) to assess the numb areas and then head to the operating room. In the operating room, the catheter will be removed after the surgeon obtains baseline CT scan images of the spine. Once surgery is completed, investigators will record pain scores over the next four days in the hospital and the amount of pain medication needed for controlling pain related to the surgery.

Motivational Interviewing for Oral Hygiene

14 - 19
All Sexes
Birmingham, AL
This study is being conducted to explore how motivational interviewing (MI), A patient-centered counseling method, can help improve oral health awareness and practices in adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment. Adolescents often struggle to maintain good oral hygiene during orthodontic care, which can lead to complications such as gum disease, tooth decay, and poor treatment outcomes. Participants in this study will receive brief, structured conversations focused on encouraging them to set goals and take responsibility for their oral health. These interviews are designed to be non-judgmental and supportive, helping the participants explore their own motivations for keeping their teeth and gums healthy during braces treatment. The study will take place at a pediatric dentistry clinic and will involve adolescents aged approximately 14 to 19 who are receiving orthodontic care. The goal is to assess whether this type of communication improves their oral hygiene behaviors and outcomes compared to standard oral health education. Findings from this research may help pediatric dentists and orthodontists improve how they engage adolescent patients in taking care of their oral health.

Antibacterial Soap + Ointment for Wound Infection

18+
All Sexes
Marlton, NJ
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if reducing bacterial load on the skin and nostrils with topical antibacterial soap and ointment, respectively, reduces rate of infection in surgical sites on lower leg wounds left open to heal in adults undergoing skin cancer surgery. The main question it aims to answer is: Does Hibiclens antibacterial skin cleanser and mupirocin antibacterial ointment applied to nostrils prior to surgery lower the number of times participants develop an infection in their open wound on the lower leg? Researchers will compare the treatment group to the standard of care, which involves no treatment prior to surgery, to see if topical antibiotics applied prior to surgery affect infection rates between the two groups. Participants randomized to the treatment group will: Shower with Hibiclens once daily for 5 days prior to the day of surgery and apply mupirocin to the nostrils twice daily for 5 days prior to the day of surgery. They will then send pictures of their surgical site to monitor for signs of infection at 2-week and 4-week post-operation. Participants randomized to the control group (standard of care) will: NOT apply the topical antibacterials prior to the day of surgery. They will then send pictures of their surgical site to monitor for signs of infection at 2-week intervals for 1 month after surgery.
