Micro-K Toxicity & Overdose Risk
Potassium salts should not be taken orally by those with normal kidney functioning. If taken too quickly or if the kidneys are unable to process it, dangerously high levels of potassium can build up in the body and cause serious health complications. High levels of potassium can be hard to detect as they usually don't come with symptoms, but an increase in potassium levels (6.5-8.0 mEq/L) can be seen through changes in the electrocardiogram and very high levels (9-12 mEq/L) can cause muscle paralysis and cardiac arrest.
