Effectiveness

How Deferasirox Affects Patients

Deferasirox is an oral medication that binds to iron in the body. It has a strong attraction to iron, and it can also have a mild effect on zinc and copper levels. It is not yet clear what the implications of this decrease in zinc and copper levels may be.

How Deferasirox works in the body

Deferasirox binds to and removes iron from the body. It has a strong attraction to trivalent (ferric) iron, which it binds to and forms a stable complex with. This complex is then removed when you urinate.

When to interrupt dosage

The amount of Deferasirox is contingent upon the determined disorder, including Iron Overload, Blood Transfusions and Non-transfusion Dependent Thalassemia. Dosage is also contingent upon the method of delivery (e.g. Granule or Tablet, film coated) stated in the table beneath.
