How Cleocin Phosphate Affects PatientsClindamycin is an antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from making proteins. It has to be taken every six hours to make sure it is working effectively. Clindamycin can cause severe diarrhea, even up to two months after taking the medication which can be life-threatening. It mostly works on gram-positive bacteria and some anaerobic bacteria, but there can be resistance. Before taking this medication, it is important to check the local antibiotic resistance patterns for common pathogens.
How Cleocin Phosphate works in the bodyClindamycin works by blocking the production of proteins in bacteria. It does this by attaching to the ribosomes, which are the parts of cells that make proteins. It then prevents the ribosomes from making proteins. For acne, it is thought that clindamycin works by killing the bacteria that causes acne.

Cleocin Phosphate Toxicity & Overdose RiskThe toxic dose of clindamycin in mice and rats has been measured at 2540 mg/kg and 2190 mg/kg, respectively. While no overdose cases have been reported, symptoms may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. In one instance, a 3-year-old child was given 100 mg/kg of the drug daily for 5 days and only experienced mild abdominal pain and diarrhea. Activated charcoal can be used to remove unabsorbed clindamycin from the body, but dialysis is not effective. In cases of overdose, general supportive care is recommended.
