It is the most widely prescribed thiazide diuretic but its usage is declining in favor of other types of medication such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers. Many combination products containing hydrochlorothiazide and these other medications are available. It was approved by the FDA in 1959.

How Benicar Hct Affects PatientsHydrochlorothiazide helps the body get rid of extra water by blocking the absorption of sodium and water in the kidneys. It can be taken at different doses, depending on the individual, ranging from 25-100mg. People with reduced kidney or liver function should use this drug with caution.
How Benicar Hct works in the bodyHydrochlorothiazide works by blocking the reabsorption of sodium and chloride by cells in the distal convoluted tubule. This reduces the concentration gradient between the cells and the tubule, which prevents water from being reabsorbed. The transporter proteins OAT1, OAT3, and OAT4 help hydrochlorothiazide get into the cells, and MRP4 helps it get out of the cells. The sodium-potassium ATPase is responsible for pumping sodium into the interstitium, and the sodium-chloride symporter (SLC12A3) helps reabsorb sodium and chloride.

The measure of Benicar Hct is contingent upon the diagnosed circumstance, including Antepartum magnesium sulfate prophylaxis, blood pressure inadequately controlled with monotherapy and antihypertensives. It works well, but has some downsides: I have to urinate more frequently, and if I'm in the sun for too long my tan takes forever to fade. Additionally, my eyesight has progressively gotten worse each year; I now need prescription glasses. Finally, it's difficult not to gain weight while taking this medication.

2/14/2017 I used this for a year or two and it did lower my blood pressure from 155/100 to 120/80. However, the side effects were intolerable: burning pain in my stomach that made me hate taking the medication. I eventually stopped taking it and changed prescriptions.
