Treatment Summary
Methyldopa is a medication used to lower blood pressure. It works by blocking certain signals in the body that cause high blood pressure. Methyldopa was first introduced in 1960 and is usually taken as a pill or injection. It is most commonly used in pregnant women or those with kidney problems. Although there are newer, better-tolerated medications to treat high blood pressure, methyldopa is still used either by itself or in combination with other medications.

Effectiveness
How Aldomet Affects Patients
Methyldopa works by decreasing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which helps to lower blood pressure. It can also reduce the levels of certain hormones and neurotransmitters in the body. When taken orally, it typically starts working within 12 to 24 hours and its effects typically peak within 4 to 6 hours. Once taken, the drug will remain in the body for 24 to 48 hours after it is stopped. When taken intravenously, the effects last for 10 to 16 hours.
How Aldomet works in the body
Methyldopa helps reduce blood pressure by working on two different pathways in the body. It stimulates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brainstem, which reduces the amount of norepinephrine released in the area. This decreases the signals sent to the peripheral nervous system that produce constriction of blood vessels. Methyldopa also inhibits an enzyme called DOPA decarboxylase, which helps to deplete biogenic amines like norepinephrine. However, this effect only plays a minor role in the blood-pressure-lowering effect of methyldopa.

Aldomet Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The smallest toxic amount of methyldopa taken orally is 44gm/kg/3Y for a female. In rats and mice, the lethal dose when taken orally is 5000mg/kg and 5300mg/kg respectively. When taken intraperitoneally, it is 300mg/kg in rats and 150mg/kg in mice. Overdosing on methyldopa can lead to low blood pressure, fatigue, weakness, slow heart rate, dizziness, lightheadedness, constipation, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment includes removing the drug from the body by inducing vomiting or gastric lav
