Epinephrine is a drug that works like the body's natural fight-or-flight response. It increases heart rate, makes the heart beat harder, and stimulates the release of a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure. It can also open up the airways to help with breathing problems, help delay labor, and increase the production of fluid in the eye. Epinephrine is used to reduce symptoms of croup, itching, hives, and swelling, and can also relieve gastrointestinal and urinary issues caused by anaphylaxis.

How Xylocaine works in the body

Epinephrine works on two types of receptors in the body. It can constrict blood vessels and reduce fluid leakage, which helps with fluid loss and low blood pressure during allergic reactions. It also relaxes the muscles in the lungs and eyes, which helps with breathing difficulties, wheezing, and blurred vision. Lastly, epinephrine increases the amount of sugar in your blood and helps your liver release stored sugar. All of these effects help relieve the symptoms of anaphylaxis or other allergic reactions.

Xylocaine Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Skin toxicity in rats is linked to a dose of 62mg/kg. During pregnancy, epinephrine is known to have teratogenic effects in rats when given at doses 25x larger than human doses. It is not known if epinephrine affects reproductive capacity in pregnant women. If epinephrine is used to support blood pressure during labor, it can cause fetal heart rate to accelerate and should not be used if the mother's blood pressure is higher than 130/80. Xylocaine for Administration of Local Anesthetic Drug

This medication was given to me by my rheumatologist as a treatment for carpal tunnel symptoms. The Xylocaine injection worked quickly and effectively, numbing the area completely so that I felt no pain from the Kenalog injection.
