How Tobrex Affects PatientsTobramycin is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including some biothreat agents. Taking tobramycin can be risky because it can cause damage to the kidneys, ears, and nerves. It can also affect a baby in the womb, leading to permanent hearing loss. All tobramycin formulations carry a risk of allergic reactions, which can sometimes be fatal.
How Tobrex works in the bodyTobramycin works by binding to the cell membranes of bacteria. It increases the permeability of the cell, allowing it to enter the cell and target the bacterial cells' ribosomes, which are responsible for making proteins. This causes proteins to be made incorrectly, leading to the destruction of the cell. Bacteria can become resistant to tobramycin by modifying the ribosome or the tobramycin molecule itself. Tobramycin is also not effective against anaerobic bacteria since it requires active transport across bacterial membranes.
