Effectiveness

How Sevoflurane Affects Patients

Sevoflurane helps relax the muscles and reduce pain sensitivity by changing how cells respond to stimulation. It works more quickly than halothane and isoflurane, and does not need to dissolve in the blood for it to take effect. However, sevoflurane can cause several side effects, such as renal injury, respiratory depression, and QT prolongation. It can also lead to malignant hyperthermia, perioperative hyperkalemia, and pediatric neurotoxicity. Additionally, using sevoflurane can make people less alert, so they should not drive or operate machinery after receiving

How Sevoflurane works in the body

Sevoflurane is an anesthetic that works by blocking nerve signals in the brain. It binds to several receptors, including ones that respond to GABA, glycine, acetylcholine, serotonin, and glutamate. It also affects how ions like calcium and potassium flow through the body, which helps regulate the heart.

Sevoflurane Toxicity & Overdose Risk

If someone has taken too much sevoflurane, stop administering it and make sure they can breathe. Assist or control their breathing with oxygen and keep their heart function stable. Overdosing on sevoflurane can lead to serious effects such as damage to the kidneys, lungs, and heart, as well as slowed heart rate and cardiac arrest. Animal studies have shown that long periods of exposure to sevoflurane can cause changes to the brain's synapses and cell growth. The lowest toxic dose of sevoflurane in rats is 10.8 g/kg and 18.2 g

Sevoflurane for General Anesthesia

We used this as a general anesthetic for my dog's c-section, and she was completely psychotic and aggressive for two weeks after the surgery. This never happened when we used isoflurane for her previous surgeries.

Patient Q&A Section about sevoflurane

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is the use of sevoflurane?

"Sevoflurane is sometimes inhaled to anesthesia someone before and during surgery. It is a type of medicine called a general anesthetic."

Answered by AI

What does sevoflurane smell like?

"Sevoflurane is a fluorinated isopropyl ether that smells sweet and only faintly unpleasant, making it a good choice for inhalation inductions."

Answered by AI

What is the mechanism of action of sevoflurane?

"The way sevoflurane works has not been completely explained. Like other drugs used for anesthesia, sevoflurane affects the nervous system by binding to certain channels that control the flow of ions. This action blocks communication between nerve cells."

Answered by AI

What are the possible side effects of sevoflurane?

"Some symptoms of a heart attack are blurred vision, chest pain, tightness or discomfort, choking, fast or irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. Other symptoms include a slow or irregular heartbeat, being unable to speak, or unusual tiredness or weakness."
