Salbutamol is a mix of two different molecules, R- and S-isomers, with the R-isomer being more effective but also more expensive. There is a single-R-isomer version of salbutamol called levalbuterol, although it is not used as widely because of the higher cost. Salbutamol is used to relieve acute breathing problems or to prevent them from occurring during exercise or other activities.

How Proair Respiclick Affects PatientsSalbutamol, also known as albuterol, is a medication used to help open up airways in the lungs and make it easier to breathe. It works by stimulating certain receptors in the body. This can cause a faster heartbeat and lower blood pressure, along with muscle tremors, and may also affect blood sugar and potassium levels. It is usually taken orally or injected. The drug is made up of two different parts, and the R-enantiomer is thought to cause fewer side-effects.
How Proair Respiclick works in the bodySalbutamol is an inhaled medicine that relaxes the airways in the lungs by targeting beta2-adrenergic receptors. This triggers a response in the cells that leads to increased cyclic AMP, which helps relax the airway muscles and reduces inflammation. Salbutamol is more effective at relaxing airways than other similar medicines but has fewer effects on the heart. It begins to work within 5-15 minutes and can last up to 6 hours.

Proair Respiclick Toxicity & Overdose RiskOverdosing on Albuterol can cause excessive stimulation of the body's beta-adrenergic system, resulting in seizures, chest pain, high or low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, headaches, tremors, muscle cramps, dry mouth, palpitations, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, high blood sugar, low potassium, and acidosis. Pregnant women should use caution when taking Albuterol, as it may cause birth defects. Nursing mothers should speak to their doctor before using Albuterol. Albuterol is not recommended for children under four years of age.

1/17/2020 This inhaler is very ineffective. My son has moderate, persistent asthma and has been using inhalers since he was 3 years old. When he used his old inhaler, 2 puffs would relieve his symptoms for hours. With this new one, he is going through it twice as fast and still not getting relief. When he uses my inhaler, he is fine. His inhaler costs $75 with insurance while mine (not covered by insurance) only costs $30.

7/25/2019 The pump is difficult to use. I had too watch a video on YouTube while I was having difficulty breathing. The medication took several minutes to work. All the deep inhaling caused chest pain. I had to purchase an inhaler over the counter until I was able to obtain a prescription for the standard inhaler.

4/20/2017 I didn't realize this was a powder formula when my doctor prescribed it to me, and it definitely made my breathing worse. Whenever I used it, I would start coughing uncontrollably. It's not easy to switch out if you don't have insurance, so I would not recommend this product.

12/31/2019 How this type of inhaler is allowed is beyond me. It's absolutely terrible and dangerous if not used correctly. I use it to care for my elderly mother with dementia, and there's no way to know if she's actually inhaling the medicine or not. The implications are serious if this product isn't used as directed.
