How Plan B Affects PatientsLevonorgestrel is an emergency contraceptive pill that can help prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of intercourse. It works by preventing ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine and implantable devices are even more effective at preventing pregnancy, being over 99% effective. Levonorgestrel is also used in hormonal therapy to help reduce the risk of endometrial cancer in patients taking estrogen.
How Plan B works in the bodyLevonorgestrel is an oral contraceptive that prevents ovulation, changes cervical mucus, and affects implantation of a fertilized egg. It works by blocking the release of a hormone that triggers ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg. It may also prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus. In hormone therapy, levonorgestrel is used with estrogens to reduce the risk of developing endometrial cancer.
