What is Nipride

NitroprussideThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryNitroprusside is a medication used to widen and relax blood vessels, specifically those leading away from the heart. It is administered intravenously to treat high blood pressure in medical emergencies. Nitroprusside works by releasing nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes the walls of the blood vessels.

Effectiveness

How Nipride Affects PatientsNitroprusside is a drug that relaxes the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, leading to an increase in their size. This effect is stronger on veins than on arteries, and will not affect smooth muscle in other parts of the body such as the uterus or duodenum.
How Nipride works in the bodySodium nitroprusside is a drug that helps reduce blood pressure by releasing nitric oxide into the bloodstream. This nitric oxide binds to guanylate cyclase in the cells of the blood vessels, increasing the amount of cGMP. This cGMP then causes calcium ions to move from the cytoplasm to the endoplasmic reticulum, reducing the amount of available calcium ions. This ultimately leads to blood vessel dilation and lower blood pressure. Sodium nitroprusside also breaks down into cyanide and methemoglobin, which binds to the cyanide and helps flush it out of the body

Common Nipride Drug Interactions
Drug Name
Risk Level
Description
Amifostine
Major
Nitroprusside may increase the hypotensive activities of Amifostine.
Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate
Major
Nitroprusside can cause a decrease in the absorption of Technetium Tc-99m oxidronate resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.
3-Aza-2,3-Dihydrogeranyl Diphosphate
Minor
Nitroprusside can cause a decrease in the absorption of 3-Aza-2,3-Dihydrogeranyl Diphosphate resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.
Abacavir
Minor
Nitroprusside may decrease the excretion rate of Abacavir which could result in a higher serum level.
Acebutolol
Minor
Nitroprusside may increase the hypotensive activities of Acebutolol.
Nipride Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking too much nitroprusside can lead to low blood pressure, cyanide poisoning, or thiocyanate poisoning. The average lethal dose of nitroprusside in rabbits, dogs, mice, and rats is 2.8, 5.0, 8.4, and 11.2 mg/kg respectively.

Patient Q&A Section about nipride

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

How does Nipride decrease blood pressure?

"1 Once in the body, sodium nitroprusside is quickly broken down into nitric oxide, a powerful vasodilator. This nitric oxide works as a vasodilator, causing the muscles surrounding blood vessels to relax, allowing the blood vessels themselves to expand. As the blood vessels expand, blood pressure drops."
