Morphine

The Generic name of this drug

Treatment Summary

Morphine is an opioid medication derived from poppy seeds that was first discovered in 1805. It is a powerful pain reliever, but its usage is limited due to its potential for addiction, withdrawal, and abuse. Morphine is still used today, and it is often combined with other, less strong opioids like codeine, fentanyl, methadone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, and oxycodone. Morphine was approved by the FDA in 1941.

Effectiveness

How Oramorph Sr Affects Patients

Morphine works by blocking the transmission of pain signals in the body, and it typically takes 6-30 minutes to start working. Taking too much morphine can cause long-term changes in the brain. Men and women respond differently to morphine, with women being more sensitive to its effects. Morphine-6-glucuronide is much weaker than regular morphine; it is 22 times less likely to cause pupil constriction.

How Oramorph Sr works in the body

Morphine-6-glucuronide, a metabolite of morphine, is responsible for most of the drug's effects. It works by activating two types of opioid receptors: mu and kappa. The mu-opioid receptor is linked to the drug's ability to affect the reward pathway in the brain and to modify the respiratory system. The kappa-opioid receptor is associated with addiction disorders.

When to interrupt dosage

The prescribed amount of Oramorph Sr is contingent upon the specified condition, such as Therapeutic procedure, Pain and Chronic Pain. The quantity of dosage can be found in the table below, contingent upon the mode of administration.

Oramorph Sr Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The lethal dose of morphine for males is 0.78µg/mL and for females it is 0.98µg/mL. Overdosing on morphine can lead to slowed breathing, sleepiness, weak muscles, cold and clammy skin, constricted pupils, and dilated pupils. Symptoms can worsen to include fluid buildup in the lungs, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and even death. Treatment for morphine overdose includes oxygen, medication to boost blood pressure, and medication to counteract the effects of morphine.

In comparison to other drugs, this one did not work at all for me or the three other people I know who have tried it. I believe that pharmacies are switch patients to this cheaper version in order to save money, rather than provide effective care.
