How Naprosyn Affects Patients

Naproxen is a non-selective NSAID used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and lower fever. It works by blocking a certain enzyme, which reduces the amount of prostaglandins in the body. However, naproxen can have negative effects, such as raising blood pressure and increasing the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. People taking corticosteroids or anticoagulants, or who have a history of stomach ulcers, are more likely to experience these side effects.

How Naprosyn works in the body

Naproxen works to reduce pain, fever and inflammation by blocking two enzymes in the body: COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 is usually found in normal tissues like the stomach lining and is always active, while COX-2 produces prostaglandins that are responsible for pain, fever, and inflammation. By blocking these two enzymes, naproxen can provide relief from pain, fever, and inflammation without causing many of the unwanted side effects like gastrointestinal upset and renal toxicities.

When to interrupt dosage

The proposed dosage of Naprosyn is contingent upon the established condition, such as Menstrual Distress (Dysmenorrhea), Migraine and Toothache. The amount of dosage fluctuates as per the technique of delivery (e.g. Tablet, extended release or Tablet, delayed release) specified in the following table.

Naprosyn Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Naproxen is available without a prescription, but this raises the risk of an overdose. Mild symptoms of an overdose include drowsiness, fatigue, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. There is no cure for an overdose but symptoms usually go away with supportive care. Naproxen is not recommended for pregnant women in the third trimester because it can cause a premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus.

I was given this medication for the chronic pain that comes with fatigue syndrome. Within hours of taking the first pill, I went numb on one side of my body and felt very weak and dizzy. I stopped taking them after that because the headaches were awful and lasted for months. Even now, years later, I still get strange stars in front of my eyes sometimes.

However, after only two weeks on the medication, I began having black stool—a sign of bleeding in the stomach.
