The Generic name of this drug
Treatment Summary
Midazolam is a short-acting drug that can reduce anxiety, relax muscles, and cause sleepiness or memory loss. It belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. Midazolam is available in various forms, such as oral, rectal, nasal, intramuscular, and intravenous. It is commonly used before medical procedures, such as dentistry and endoscopy, and for the treatment of status epilepticus in adults. Midazolam is classified as a Schedule IV drug in the US because it has a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence.

How Midazolam Hydrochloride Affects Patients
Midazolam is a type of drug that works on the nervous system to cause drowsiness and reduce anxiety. It works by boosting the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA, which helps to control brain activity. When taken by adults, it usually takes 15 minutes to start working, and people may forget what happened 30-60 minutes after taking it. For kids, it starts working in 5 minutes and up to 85% of them may forget what happened 30 minutes after taking it. When given intravenously, sedation usually occurs within 3-5 minutes and 71-90% of adults and kids may not remember what happened afterwards.
How Midazolam Hydrochloride works in the body
Midazolam is a type of benzodiazepine that works by increasing the activity of the neurotransmitter GABA in the central nervous system. This results in a calming effect, as well as relaxation of the skeletal muscles, and can help induce sleep, anesthesia, and amnesia. Midazolam binds to special sites on GABA-A receptors, which increases the frequency of chloride channel openings. These receptors are found in different parts of the body, but are mostly located in the central nervous system.

Midazolam Hydrochloride Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The toxic dose of midazolam in rats is 215mg/kg. Signs of overdosing on midazolam include drowsiness, confusion, impaired coordination, decreased reflexes, coma, and other changes in vital signs. In serious cases, cardiorespiratory problems, such as difficulty breathing and low blood pressure, can occur, potentially leading to death or permanent neurological damage. Monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function is recommended after administering midazolam, as is the use of resuscitation equipment and personnel trained in airway management. Long-term use of midazolam has been linked to physical dependence, particularly

Patient Q&A Section about midazolam hydrochloride
These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
Is midazolam a sedative?
"Midazolam is a drug used to sedate patients before medical procedures. It is a benzodiazepine that acts on the central nervous system, causing rapid onset of action with few adverse effects."
Answered by AI
What is midazolam hydrochloride used for?
"Midazolam is a medication used to cause drowsiness, relieve anxiety, and prevent any memory of the event before medical procedures and surgery. It is also sometimes given as part of the anesthesia during surgery to produce a loss of consciousness."
Answered by AI
Is midazolam stronger than diazepam?
"Forty patients who were going to have upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for the first time were randomly given either diazepam or midazolam as a sedative."
Answered by AI
Is midazolam a Xanax?
"Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorders.
Midazolam and Xanax may both be benzodiazepines, but they have different uses. Midazolam Injection is typically used as a sedative before surgery or other medical procedures, while Midazolam hydrochloride syrup is used in pediatric patients. Xanax, on the other hand, is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorders."
