How Mannitol 20% Affects Patients

Mannitol is a type of sugar alcohol that when added to water can make the solution acidic. For this reason, it is sometimes combined with a substance, such as sodium bicarbonate, to adjust its pH. Mannitol is usually taken to increase urine production and to treat medical conditions caused by excessive fluid in the body. It is often combined with other diuretics and/or fluids given intravenously. Inhaling mannitol can cause bronchospasm and coughing up blood, so it should be stopped if either of these occur.

How Mannitol 20% works in the body

Mannitol is a natural sugar found in fruits and vegetables that helps reduce swelling in the brain and eyes. It also helps flush out toxins from the body and can be used to measure the filtration rate of the kidneys. In people with cystic fibrosis, mannitol works by creating an osmotic gradient that draws fluid out of the cells in the airway, making it easier for mucus to be cleared.

When to interrupt dosage

The prescribed dose of Mannitol 20% is dependent upon the diagnosed situation, including glomerular filtration rate measurement, transurethral surgery and Kidney Failure, Acute. The amount of dosage is contingent upon the method of delivery (e.g. Kit - Intravenous or Liquid) indicated in the table below.

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is 10% mannitol used for?

"Mannitol 10% is an osmotic diuretic that is prescribed to help relieve increased pressure in the brain and eyes, as well as to promote the excretion of toxins through urine in patients with kidney failure."

Answered by AI

What is 20% mannitol used for?

"This medicine is used to treat acute renal (kidney) failure, cerebral edema (accumulation of excessive fluid in the brain), and to reduce the pressure inside the eyes in a condition called glaucoma."

Answered by AI

What is the use of mannitol solution?

"This indicates that the 10% solution of Mannitol is effective in preventing renal failure by promoting diuresis, or the increased production of urine."
