How Lovaza Affects Patients
Omega-3-acid ethyl esters can help lower triglyceride levels, increase the breakdown of fat, prevent fat from being released into the bloodstream, clear out triglycerides faster, and decrease the amount of VLDL-C (very low density lipoprotein cholesterol) in the body.
How Lovaza works in the body
Omega-3-acid ethyl esters help reduce triglyceride levels in the body. The exact mechanism is unknown, but it is thought that the drug blocks enzymes involved in the production of triglycerides, increases fat metabolism, and increases the breakdown of triglycerides. It also competes with other enzymes to decrease the production of VLDL-C.

Lovaza Toxicity & Overdose Risk
Omega-3-acid ethyl esters have not been found to be mutagenic or cause chromosomal damage in rats, nor have they been found to affect fertility. There is no evidence from human studies on the safety of this drug during pregnancy, but studies in rats have indicated that high doses may harm an unborn baby. In lactating rats, this drug has been found to be excreted in breastmilk at levels 6 to 14 times higher than in the mother's bloodstream, but it is not known if this could harm a nursing infant. Omega-3-acid ethyl esters have not been tested in children or
