What is Kadian

MorphineThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryMorphine is a powerful painkiller that is derived from opium. It has been used since 1805, but is limited by tolerance, withdrawal and the potential for abuse. Morphine is still widely used, but there are also many other semi-synthetic opioid medications of varying strengths, such as codeine, fentanyl, methadone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, and oxycodone. Morphine was approved by the FDA in 1941.

Effectiveness

How Kadian Affects PatientsMorphine attaches to opioid receptors, which blocks signals in the body that cause pain. It takes 6-30 minutes for it to start working. Taking too much morphine and other opioids can change the way neurons in the brain function. Men and women respond differently to morphine; men need 76ng/mL for it to be effective, while women only need 22ng/mL. Morphine-6-glucuronide is much weaker than morphine and is only 22 times as effective at reducing pupil size.
How Kadian works in the bodyMorphine-6-glucuronide is responsible for most of the effects of morphine. This molecule binds to the mu and kappa opioid receptors, which are responsible for morphine's effects on the brain and body. The mu-opioid receptor in particular is responsible for morphine's effects on the reward pathway, as well as its ability to modify the respiratory system and cause addiction.

Kadian for Chronic Pain
Kadian has been an amazing help for my severe scoliosis. I can finally function at work without feeling foggy and exhausted all the time. The only downside is that it's caused me some constipation issues, but hopefully I'll be able to wean myself off of it in the next year.

Kadian for Chronic Pain
Kadian was an excellent treatment for my spondylosis; however, over time I'm beginning to experience more breakthrough pain. Not sure if this is due to the progression of the disease or if the generic Kadian is not as effective?
