Treatment Summary

Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic medication used to treat infections on the skin or in the mouth caused by bacteria, yeast, and viruses. It is a cationic biguanide containing two 4-chlorophenyl rings and two biguanide groups linked together by a central hexamethylene chain. The drug was first developed in the UK in the 1950s and was introduced to the US in the 1970s. It is now one of the most commonly used antiseptics on skin and mucous membranes.

Effectiveness

How Hibiclens Affects Patients

Chlorhexidine is an antimicrobial medicine that can kill bacteria, yeast, and viruses. The amount of medicine needed to be effective differs - lower concentrations (0.02%-0.06%) slow down the growth of organisms and higher concentrations (>0.12%) completely kill them. About 30% of the medicine stays in the mouth after it is rinsed and is slowly released into oral fluids. This is called "substantivity" and helps to keep the mouth free from germs. Unfortunately, chlorhexidine can cause staining of teeth with long-term use (up to 6 months). Allergic reactions can also

How Hibiclens works in the body

Chlorhexidine works by disrupting the outer surface of microbe cells. It contains a positively charged molecule that reacts with the negative charge of the cell surface. This reaction breaks down the cell and causes leakage of cell material. The amount of leakage depends on the concentration of chlorhexidine. Lower concentrations stop bacteria from growing, while higher concentrations will kill them.

When to interrupt dosage

The proposed portion of Hibiclens is contingent upon the diagnosed state, including Wound, Oral Hygiene and Ringworm. The amount of dosage likewise differs depending on the approach of delivery (e.g. Rinse or Cream; Kit; Ointment; Solution) specified in the table below.

Major

The therapeutic efficacy of Allogeneic cultured keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts in murine collagen can be decreased when used in combination with Chlorhexidine.

Hibiclens Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The toxic dose of chlorhexidine for mice is more than 5g/kg. Small children are particularly vulnerable to overdose, with symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and intoxication becoming apparent if 1-2 ounces are ingested. If a child swallows more than 4 ounces of chlorhexidine or shows signs of intoxication, medical attention should be sought immediately. Treatment should focus on relieving the symptoms.

Patient Q&A Section about hibiclens

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is Hibiclens used to treat?

"Hibiclens is used to prevent infection, but cannot treat an infection that is already occurring. If you have a yeast infection, ask your provider for the best way to treat it."

Answered by AI

Is Hibiclens the same as antibacterial soap?

"Hibiclens is different from other antibacterial soaps because it starts eliminating germs right away and continues to kill microorganisms for up to 24 hours."

Answered by AI

What does Hibiclens do to skin?

"Hibiclens can help reduce the amount of bacteria on your skin, which could lead to infection. You can use it as often as you need to, or as your healthcare professional advises."

Answered by AI

Can I use Hibiclens on my private area?

"Do not use Hibiclens on your head or face (including your eyes, ears, and mouth), your genital area, or wounds or scrapes that are deeper than the top layer of skin."

ELU42 Topical Spray for Foot Ulcer

18 - 75
All Sexes
O'Fallon, IL

ELU42 01 01 (SuperHealer42) is a Phase I/IIA open label study sponsored by Eluciderm, Inc. that evaluates the safety and preliminary effectiveness of ELU42, a topical small molecule designed to modulate Wnt signaling, for the treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). ELU42 combines a tankyrase inhibitor (XAV939) with a novel derivatized hyaluronic acid excipient (DHA77) and is applied as a topical spray to the index ulcer. Fifteen adults with Wagner grade 1-2 diabetic foot ulcers that have been present for at least 4 weeks and up to 52 weeks will be enrolled across up to four U.S. clinical sites. After a 2 week run in period during which standard of care (SOC) is provided (off loading, dressings, and debridement), subjects will receive ELU42 applied on site by trained study staff or the investigator three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) for six weeks (up to 18 applications). Subjects will be followed weekly during treatment and for up to 6 weeks after the final dose; additional Healing Confirmation visits are scheduled if the wound closes to evaluate the subjects over a course of a 3 month period. The study's co-primary objectives are to assess safety (incidence and severity of adverse events and infections) and to measure percent area reduction (PAR) of the index ulcer at Weeks 4 and 6. Efficacy assessments will be performed by the site investigator using direct two axis planimetry and by automated evaluation using the Tissue Analytics platform (surface area, volume, and PAR). Secondary and exploratory assessments include patient reported outcomes (Wound Q and SF 36), frequency of complete wound healing, wound hydration metrics, and pharmacokinetic sampling in a subset of subjects. Contact information for potential participants and referring clinicians is available at each participating site.

Nitrous Oxide for Pain During Bladder Botox Injections

18+
Female
Cincinnati, OH

The goal of this clinical trial is to assess if a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen can improve pain control during bladder Botox injections. The primary question it aims to answer is: Does using nitrous oxide lower the overall level of pain during the procedure? Researchers will compare a 50:50 nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture (administered with the Pro-Nox system) plus standard care (with lidocaine in the bladder) to sham mask plus standard care to see if nitrous oxide works better for lowering pain. Participants will: * Receive their bladder Botox injection in the office setting * Either use nitrous oxide/oxygen plus standard care during the procedure, or sham mask plus standard care * Answer brief questions about pain, anxiety, satisfaction, and willingness to repeat the procedure

Enhanced Oral Health Care for Gum Disease in Pregnancy

18+
Female
San Francisco, CA

Many pregnant people don't get the dental care they need, even though it's safe and important. The CHEER Study offers free dental check-ups, cleanings, and supplies to help participants take care of their teeth and gums during pregnancy. The purpose of this research study is to compare two types of noninvasive oral health interventions to evaluate their effectiveness. We want to learn if one method is more effective in supporting oral health and improving pregnancy outcomes. There are two aims of this study: Aim 1: To evaluate whether a structured oral health intervention reduces periodontal inflammation during pregnancy and postpartum in pregnant people with indicators of periodontal disease. Aim 2: To assess whether a structured oral health intervention is associated with changes in oral health behaviors or birth outcomes in pregnant people with periodontal disease.

Antibiotic Carriers for Breast Reconstruction

18+
Female
Sacramento, CA

Infections after tissue expander breast reconstruction can lead to pain, additional surgeries, and loss of the reconstruction. This study will compare two types of antibiotic carriers used during surgery to help lower the risk of infection. One carrier is a non-absorbable PMMA disc, and the other is an absorbable antibiotic bead. Both release antibiotics directly into the breast pocket after surgery. About 100 patients will be randomly assigned to receive one of these two carriers at the time of tissue expander placement. After surgery, small samples of fluid around the tissue expander will be collected during routine clinic visits. These samples will be tested to measure how much antibiotic is present over time. The study will also track infections, tissue expander loss, and other complications during the first 90 days after surgery. The goal is to learn how much antibiotic each carrier delivers and whether one method is more effective at preventing infection.

SBS-147 Safety Study

18 - 55
All Sexes
Cypress, CA

This study is part of the HEAL Initiative supported by the NIH. The purpose of this study is to learn how safe the study drug, SBS-147, is and how people's bodies respond to and process it. Researchers will also look for any side effects that may occur when taking SBS-147. Some participants will receive SBS-147, and others will receive a placebo, which looks the same but does not contain any medicine. This helps researchers fairly compare results. The study includes two parts: Single-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo one time. Multiple-Dose Group, where Participants receive SBS-147 or placebo once or twice daily for 7 days.
