What is Extina

KetoconazoleThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryKetoconazole is an antifungal drug approved by the FDA in 1981 to treat fungal infections. It works by blocking the synthesis of a type of cholesterol found in fungi, which prevents the fungi from growing. While it was originally considered a good drug for treating fungal infections, it had frequent side effects in the stomach and liver, so newer drugs like fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, and posaconazole were developed to replace it. Despite this, ketoconazole is still used in topical formulations.

Effectiveness

How Extina Affects PatientsKetoconazole is an antifungal medicine that works by stopping the growth and spread of fungi in the body. It is a type of medicine called an azole antifungal and has been shown to be effective at preventing fungus from growing and spreading.
How Extina works in the bodyKetoconazole stops fungi cells from making a special type of cholesterol called ergosterol. This stops the cells from functioning properly and makes them more permeable. As a result, the cells become less tightly packed, which stops the cells from working correctly. The drug also produces a toxic by-product that further inhibits the cell's activity.

Extina for Scaly Oily Skin Problem Primarily On Face and Scalp
This has been an absolute godsend for my seborrheic dermatitis. Within just a few uses, the foam has cleared up my flares. I haven't experienced any real drying or extra flaking, which is great. I'm using it about once every two days, and so far so good. Overall, I absolutely love this medication!
