How Daraprim Affects Patients

Pyrimethamine is a drug used to treat malaria and help clear up parasites. It works by preventing the growth of certain parasites, specifically Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii. It can't kill any of the parasites' reproductive cells, but it can stop them from multiplying further. Taking it with sulfonamides can increase its effectiveness against Toxoplasma gondii.

I found the side effects of this treatment to be really tough to deal with. Nausea, moodiness, and irritability were my main problems. It's hard to say which one was caused by the medicine itself and which ones were just a reaction to having toxoplasmosis in general.

Daraprim for AIDS with Toxoplasmosis

The side effects of this treatment were so severe that I would have rather let the toxo kill me. Three doses and I was bedridden for two weeks, during which time I couldn't keep anything down. There are other, less intense treatments available that would have been a better choice.

Pyrimethamine + Sulfadiazine + Leucovorin for Congenital Toxoplasmosis

RATIONALE: Congenital toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasitic organism Toxoplasma gondii, and it may be passed from an infected mother to her unborn child. The mother may have mild symptoms or no symptoms; the fetus, however, may experience damage to the eyes, nervous system, skin, and ears. The newborn may have a low birth weight, enlarged liver and spleen, jaundice, anemia, petechiae, and eye damage. Giving the antiparasitic drugs pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine is standard treatment for congenital toxoplasmosis, but it is not yet known which regimen of pyrimethamine is most effective for the disease. PURPOSE: Randomized phase IV trial to determine which regimen of pyrimethamine is most effective when combined with sulfadiazine and leucovorin in treating patients who have congenital toxoplasmosis.
