What is Argatroban

ArgatrobanThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryArgatroban is a medication used to prevent blood clots in people who have had, or are at risk for, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). The American College of Cardiologists (ACC) recommends argatroban during percutaneous coronary intervention. It is a non-heparin anticoagulant that helps to normalize platelet counts and stop the formation of clots. Before using argatroban, other anticoagulant medications must be stopped and a baseline activated partial thromboplastin time must be obtained.

Effectiveness

How Argatroban Affects PatientsArgatroban is an anticoagulant medicine used to prevent or treat thrombosis in those with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. It works by blocking thrombin, an enzyme that helps form blood clots. Argatroban specifically targets thrombin, and does not need another substance to work, unlike some other anticoagulants. It is very selective for thrombin and does not affect other enzymes like trypsin or factor Xa. Argatroban can stop both free-floating and clot-associated thrombin from working.
How Argatroban works in the bodyArgatroban prevents blood clots from forming by inhibiting enzymes that lead to fibrin formation, activation of certain proteins, and platelet aggregation.

Patient Q&A Section about argatroban

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

What is the difference between argatroban and heparin?

"Argatroban does not have the same negative side effects as other similar medications. It does not cause HIT antibodies or alter its clearance."

Answered by AI

What is another name for argatroban?

"Argatroban is a medication that is used to treat blood clots. It is a synthetic version of a protein that occurs naturally in the body. Argatroban is used to prevent blood clots from forming or to break up existing blood clots. It is usually given as an injection into a vein."

Answered by AI

Why is argatroban used in HIT?

"Argatroban is a rapidly acting anticoagulant that has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of death or new thrombosis. A study by Lewis et al. found that treatment of HIT with argatroban successfully lowers mortality rates from thrombosis without increased bleeding risk."

Answered by AI

What is argatroban used for?

"Argatroban inhibits blood clotting and prevents the formation of harmful clots in blood vessels. It is used to treat or prevent blood clots in patients taking heparin for bleeding problems."
