Internet-Delivered Psychotherapy for Depression
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new online therapy called Ger-iPST (Internet-Delivered Problem-Solving Therapy) to assist older adults with depression. The goal is to evaluate the therapy's effectiveness and identify factors that influence its usability. Participants will complete online therapy sessions and receive feedback from a therapist. This trial suits individuals aged 65 and older who live in Alberta, have internet access, and are experiencing depression. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could enhance mental health care for older adults.
Do I need to stop my current medications for this trial?
The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It focuses on internet-delivered psychotherapy for depression, so it's best to consult with the trial coordinators or your doctor for guidance.
What prior data suggests that this internet-delivered psychotherapy is safe for older adults with depression?
Research has shown that online therapy, such as Ger-iPST, is generally safe for older adults. Studies on similar programs have demonstrated positive outcomes, including reduced depression and high participant satisfaction. Reports of negative effects are rare, and participants generally receive the treatment well.
Ger-iPST consists of weekly online therapy sessions and homework, offering flexibility for home completion. A trained therapist provides feedback, and technical support is available, ensuring a smooth and comfortable process.
Overall, evidence suggests that Ger-iPST is a safe option for managing depression in older adults.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike traditional treatments for depression that often involve in-person therapy sessions, Ger-iPST is delivered entirely online, making it highly accessible for those who may have difficulty attending face-to-face appointments. This internet-delivered approach allows participants to engage with therapy modules at their own pace, in the comfort of their homes, while still receiving weekly support calls from a research assistant. Researchers are excited about Ger-iPST because it combines the structured problem-solving techniques of psychotherapy with the convenience of digital access, potentially reaching a wider audience and offering timely support without the need for travel or scheduling constraints.
What evidence suggests that Ger-iPST is effective for depression?
Research shows that online problem-solving therapy, such as Ger-iPST, which participants in this trial will receive, can significantly improve depression over time. Studies have found that similar online therapies effectively reduce depression when used alongside regular psychiatric care. For example, meta-analyses have shown significant reductions in depression and anxiety after using online psychological therapies. Additionally, specific studies on internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) showed greater reductions in depression compared to groups that did not receive the therapy. This suggests that Ger-iPST may be a promising option for treating depression in older adults.678910
