How Acuvail Affects PatientsKetorolac is a non-selective NSAID that works by blocking the enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) that convert arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. The COX-1 enzyme is always active and found in blood cells, the stomach lining, and blood vessel walls. The COX-2 enzyme is responsible for inflammation, pain, and fever. How Acuvail works in the bodyKetorolac is an anti-inflammatory medication that works by blocking the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that trigger pain and inflammation. Ketorolac targets an enzyme called cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for producing prostaglandins. By blocking this enzyme, ketorolac is able to reduce pain and inflammation. The "S" enantiomer of ketorolac is the most active form of the drug and is responsible for the majority of its therapeutic effects.

Overdosing on ketorolac can cause nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, fatigue, and drowsiness. More severe symptoms such as kidney failure, high blood pressure, and coma are possible but rare. Pregnant women and those trying to conceive should not take ketorolac as it may affect fertility and increase the risk of fetal ductus arteriosus closure. If taken while breastfeeding, the mother should carefully monitor the baby for any adverse effects.
