Treatment SummaryKetorolac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce pain. It comes in the form of tablets, injections, nasal spray, and eye drops. Ketorolac is commonly used to treat postoperative pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, menstrual disorders, headaches, spinal and soft tissue pain, and ankylosing spondylitis. It works as well as morphine and meperidine but without the side effects of opioids.

How Acular Ls Affects PatientsKetorolac is a non-selective painkiller that works by blocking the enzymes responsible for producing substances that contribute to inflammation and pain. Blocking the COX-1 enzyme can lead to an increased risk of bleeding and stomach ulcers, while blocking the COX-2 enzyme is what causes the desired anti-inflammatory and pain relief effects. However, it is not recommended to take ketorolac long-term as this can lead to dangerous side effects such as stomach bleeding, ulcers, and perforations.
How Acular Ls works in the bodyKetorolac helps reduce pain and inflammation by blocking the pathways that create prostaglandins. It works by targeting two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2, but mainly works on the COX-2 enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for converting arachidonic acid into prostaglandins, which cause inflammation and pain. By blocking this pathway, ketorolac stops the creation of these prostaglandins and reduces pain and inflammation. It is usually given as a racemic mixture, but the "S" enantiomer is mainly responsible for its effects.

Acular Ls Toxicity & Overdose RiskTaking ketorolac may cause abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, and headaches in more than 10% of patients. Other common symptoms of an overdose include vomiting, epigastric pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, fatigue and drowsiness, kidney damage or failure, high blood pressure, and coma. Women who are pregnant or nursing should exercise caution when taking ketorolac as it can be passed through breast milk and may cause premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Women who are trying to conceive should avoid taking ketorolac as it may affect fertility.
