The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility and effects of an adapted Exercising Together, a partnered resistance training program, on the physical and mental health of prostate cancer survivors and their informal caregiver. The Exercising Together program is designed to promote teamwork during supervised group exercise classes delivered remotely through videoconferencing software. The intervention period will be 3-months with a 3-month follow-up.

The goal of this clinical pilot trial is to learn about the feasibility of a high-intensity resistance training intervention in peri- and early menopausal females. The main question it aims to answer are: -Is a 9-month resistance training intervention feasible (e.g., recruitment rates, protocol adherence, attrition) Secondary aims include examining changes in bone health, muscle strength, and menopausal symptoms. Participants will participate in a 9-month progressive, supervised, resistance training intervention. Researchers will compare secondary outcomes between the exercise group and a wait-list control group.

Changes related to Cerebral Palsy (CP) include differences in muscle architecture and cortical activity. These result in weakness, decreased functional ability and limited participation in physical activity. Strength training programs, particularly those including power training components, show great potential in improving the gross motor function of youth with CP. However, this intervention is not currently offered in the Calgary area. Delivered via an innovative partnership with community stakeholders, this project will investigate the preliminary effectiveness of the program to enable youth with CP to achieve child and family centered goals. It will also investigate the feasibility of offering this type of program via a community-hospital partnership. Research Question \& Objectives: 1. Can youth with cerebral palsy achieve their goals and improve their motor function through RIPT (Resistance Intensive Personal Training), a power training program offered jointly by specialized physiotherapists and fitness professionals in community settings? 2. What are the barriers and facilitators to delivery of RIPT in a community setting for youth, caregivers, clinicians, and program staff?

Despite improvements in treatments, head and neck cancer survivors (HNCS) still endure acute and chronic side effects such as loss of muscular strength, limitations in physical functioning, fatigue, and swallowing difficulties that impact quality of life (QoL) and limit return to work. Light-to-moderate intensity strength training (LMST) has been shown to improve some side effects. Heavy lifting strength training (HLST) may further improve outcomes in some populations, however, only one small pilot study has focused on HNCS. The LIFTING 2 trial will be the first to examine the feasibility and effects of a HLST program versus no exercise in HNCS.

High-resistance, short-duration inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST) is a novel lifestyle intervention involving 30 inhalations against a resistive load which requires only \~5 min/day and is thus ideal for youth with T2D (Y-T2D). Investigators seek to 1: assess changes in casual and 24-hr SBP, endothelial function, and arterial stiffness after 3 months of IMST vs. sham training in Y-T2D, 2: Define changes in eGFR andalbuminuria after 3 months of IMST vs. sham in Y-T2D, 3: Interrogate mechanisms of IMST by translational assessments of NO bioavailability, endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) activation, and ROS/oxidative stress, and determine the role of circulating factors.

Resistance Training for Muscle Growth

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn the effect of applying peak force/resistance to skeletal muscles during resistance exercise training in young and healthy adults. Participants will undergo two types of resistance training conditions that are randomly assigned to the left arm and leg and the right arm and leg. The LONG condition refers to Prime Fitness machines set to setting number '3' which applies peak force at a long muscle length. The SHORT condition refers to Prime Fitness machines set to setting number '2' which applies peak force at a short muscle length. The main questions the trial aims to answer are: 1. Does applying peak force at a longer or shorter muscle length during resistance exercise training result in greater muscle growth? 2. Does applying peak force at a longer or shorter muscle length during resistance exercise training result in greater muscle growth? We hypothesize that: 1. LONG will induce greater hypertrophy compared to SHORT conditions 2. LONG will result in greater increases in 1RM strength compared to SHORT 3. LONG and SHORT training will result in angle specific increases in isokinetic strength 4. Muscle oxygenation will decline to a greater degree during LONG compared to SHORT exercise and this will be maintained between weeks 1 and 12 of training The investigators will compare the change in muscle volume and muscular strength between the LONG and SHORT training conditions, which each participant will have the left arm and leg as well as the right arm and leg randomly assigned to either exclusively LONG or SHORT conditions. Participants will: * Resistance train the left and right arm and leg with two separate conditions; LONG and SHORT for 12 weeks, with the first and last weeks dedicated to only strength testing (Isotonic and Isokinetic) and measuring muscle volume via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) * Visit the gym for resistance training 2 times per week * Visit the UBC MRI Research Facility in weeks 1 and 12 for MRI of muscle volume

Local muscle endurance (LME) is the ability of a muscle(s) to resist fatigue and is needed for daily activities of life such as climbing stairs, lifting/moving objects, and in sport contexts like rock climbing, mixed martial arts, cross-fit, kayaking and canoeing. Therefore, the investigators want learn how to improve LME and understand what in human bodies changes during exercise training to cause these changes. The investigators know that lifting weights improves muscle strength which is believed to improve LME. Specifically lifting less heavy weights (LLRET) for more repetitions leads to greater gains in LME opposed to heavier weights for fewer repetitions. Therefore, lifting less heavy weights likely causes greater changes in our muscles than lifting heavier weights that cause improvements in LME. Aerobic exercise preformed at high intensities in an interval format (HIIT) may also help improve LME by increasing our muscle's ability to produce energy during exercise. Therefore, the investigators want to see which of LLRET or HIIT leads to greater improvements in LME.

How much do Strength Training clinical trials pay?

Each trial will compensate patients a different amount, but $50-100 for each visit is a fairly common range for Phase 2–4 trials (Phase 1 trials often pay substantially more). Further, most trials will cover the costs of a travel to-and-from the clinic.

How do Strength Training clinical trials work?

After a researcher reviews your profile, they may choose to invite you in to a screening appointment, where they'll determine if you meet 100% of the eligibility requirements. If you do, you'll be sorted into one of the treatment groups, and receive your study drug. For some trials, there is a chance you'll receive a placebo. Across Strength Training trials 30% of clinical trials have a placebo. Typically, you'll be required to check-in with the clinic every month or so. The average trial length for Strength Training is 12 months.

How do I participate in a study as a "healthy volunteer"?

Not all studies recruit healthy volunteers: usually, Phase 1 studies do. Participating as a healthy volunteer means you will go to a research facility several times over a few days or weeks to receive a dose of either the test treatment or a "placebo," which is a harmless substance that helps researchers compare results. You will have routine tests during these visits, and you'll be compensated for your time and travel, with the number of appointments and details varying by study.

What does the "phase" of a clinical trial mean?

The phase of a trial reveals what stage the drug is in to get approval for a specific condition. Phase 1 trials are the trials to collect safety data in humans. Phase 2 trials are those where the drug has some data showing safety in humans, but where further human data is needed on drug effectiveness. Phase 3 trials are in the final step before approval. The drug already has data showing both safety and effectiveness. As a general rule, Phase 3 trials are more promising than Phase 2, and Phase 2 trials are more promising than phase 1.

Do I need to be insured to participate in a Strength Training medical study?

Clinical trials are almost always free to participants, and so do not require insurance. The only exception here are trials focused on cancer, because only a small part of the typical treatment plan is actually experimental. For these cancer trials, participants typically need insurance to cover all the non-experimental components.
