What Are Endometriosis Clinical Trials?
The uterus has an endometrial tissue lining called the endometrium. During the menstrual cycle, the body grows a new endometrium lining every month for the fertilized egg. Endometriosis is when this endometrial tissue begins to grow outside the uterus.
The only way to conclusively diagnose endometriosis is via laparoscopy, making it hard to diagnose. The symptoms of endometriosis are also similar to various other conditions, and there is a massive lack of knowledge and awareness among health experts and people. All of this makes it harder to diagnose.
Medical conditions specific to females have largely been neglected by the medical community, which is why endometriosis clinical trials are important for finding a better diagnosis, treatments, and knowledge about the condition.
Why Is Endometriosis Being Studied in Clinical Trials?
Around 10% of females are affected by endometriosis globally. It can result in extreme pelvic pain, cramping, and abdominal and lower back pain. It causes pain after and during sex, as well as pain during urination and bowel movements. Heavy and excessive bleeding during periods and even between menstrual cycles is experienced.
Since it is such a painful medical condition and quite difficult to diagnose, endometriosis clinical trials are necessary to learn more about the condition.
How Does Endometriosis Treatment Work?
Currently, no cure is available for endometriosis (again, highlighting the importance of endometriosis clinical trials). There are some treatments that can help with the symptoms, such as:
- Painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen
- Hormone contraceptives and medicines
- Surgery to remove endometriosis tissue
- Removing part or all organs affected by endometriosis, such as a hysterectomy.
What Are Some of the Breakthrough Clinical Trials Involving Endometriosis?
2023: Targeted Nanoparticles with High Heating Efficiency for the Treatment of Endometriosis with Systemically Delivered Magnetic Hyperthermia – The study revealed that using heat to remove any disease-causing tissues might work for endometriosis treatment. The experiment was conducted on mice and was inspired by cancer treatment.
2018: Elagolix: First Global Approval – FDA-approved Elagolix, an oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist that can help with moderate to severe pain that comes from endometriosis.
2018: Analysis of Menstrual Effluent: Diagnostic Potential for Endometriosis – Feinstein Institute of Medical Research found that some tests on samples of menstrual blood can be a non-invasive and viable solution for diagnosing endometriosis. However, more research is needed to prove this.
Who Are the Key Opinion Leaders On Endometriosis Clinical Trial Research?
Endometriosis Research Center: Founded in 1997, ERC is focused on creating international endometriosis advocacy, awareness, education, research facilitation, and legislative efforts. It was the first endometriosis charity organization in the US.
Endometriosis Institute: This non-profit organization was founded to foster research, clinical advances, and education for the management of endometriosis.
