The Generic name of this drug
Treatment Summary
Levonorgestrel (LNG) is a type of hormone used in contraceptive methods and hormone therapy. It is known by the brand name Plan B and is used in emergency contraception as a single dose and in long-term IUD contraceptives. Levonorgestrel can also be administered through a subdermal implant that slowly releases the hormone over time. It is the most widely used emergency contraceptive and was the first emergency contraceptive to contain only progesterone. It is highly effective and does not have many estrogenic side effects.

Effectiveness
How Vienva Affects Patients
Levonorgestrel works to prevent pregnancy in three ways: by stopping ovulation, blocking fertilization, and preventing implantation. If taken within 72 hours of intercourse, it is 89% effective. If used as part of an intrauterine or implantable device, it is more than 99% effective. Additionally, it is used as part of hormonal therapy to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer associated with certain types of estrogen.
How Vienva works in the body
Levonorgestrel works to prevent ovulation in several ways. It binds to progesterone and androgen receptors, which slows the release of a hormone that triggers ovulation. It also thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to pass through, and changes the endometrium, where a fertilized egg would normally implant. When taken over a long-term period, levonorgestrel can also be used as a hormone therapy to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer associated with taking unopposed estrogen therapy.
When to interrupt dosage
The amount of Vienva is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, including Endometrial Hyperplasia, Emergency Contraception and Hypermenorrhea. The dosage fluctuates in concordance with the method of delivery outlined in the table below.
