Terbinafine is known to remain in the body for a long period of time, meaning it has a long lasting effect. It is also considered to be safe to use, even in doses higher than recommended. Before taking terbinafine, it is recommended that patients get a liver function test to lower the risk of liver damage.
How Terbinafine Hydrochloride works in the bodyTerbinafine stops an enzyme in the body from converting squalene into a molecule called 2,3-oxydosqualene. This step is part of the process to make ergosterol, a compound that makes up the cell wall. With this enzyme blocked, there is less ergosterol in the cell wall, making it weaker. The drug also causes more squalene to build up in the cells, which may make the cell wall even weaker.

Women have been found to have a lower toxic dose of 210mg/kg over 6 weeks. Overdosing on terbinafine is rare, but can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, rash, frequent urination, and headache. Treatment for an overdose should include activated charcoal and supportive care.
