Effectiveness

How Phoslo Affects PatientsPeople with severe kidney problems may have an increased amount of phosphate in their blood, which can lead to secondary hyperparathyroidism, bone and tissue damage. To reduce the amount of phosphate, people can reduce their dietary intake and use a phosphate binder like calcium acetate. This binds to dietary phosphate in the small intestine and helps remove it from the body. Keeping the phosphate levels below 6.0 mg/dl is the goal of using calcium acetate.
How Phoslo works in the bodyCalcium acetate and other calcium salts work by binding with phosphate in food, so that it can't be absorbed into the body. This helps stop excess phosphate from building up.

Phoslo for High Amount of Phosphate in the Blood
This drug has been really helpful in managing my ESRD. I take it with meals and snacks, and it helps to keep my phosphorus levels lower. It's just as effective in liquid form, too, which is great.

Phoslo for High Amount of Phosphate in the Blood
I have end stage kidney failure but am not on dialysis at this time. I was taking 4 tablets a day, three times a day before meals, to get phosphorus levels down. I had blood work done after a week on the medication It worked, but raised my calcium levels to about 11.4, much higher than normal, causing an imbalance in some of my other numbers. I probably wouldn't use it again due to this single side effect.

Patient Q&A Section about phoslo

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.

Does PhosLo increase phosphorus?

"PhosLo is a drug used to treat patients with kidney failure by reducing the amount of phosphate in their blood. The dosage is increased gradually until the phosphate level in the blood falls to the desired range."

Answered by AI

Is PhosLo the same as calcium acetate?

"Calcium acetate is a phosphate binder that helps lower phosphorus levels and protect kidneys and bones. It binds to phosphate in food before it can be absorbed by the body."

Answered by AI

Why is PhosLo given with meals?

"When calcium acetate is taken with meals, it combines with phosphate in food to form calcium phosphate. However, calcium phosphate is poorly absorbed into the body and is excreted in the feces. By binding phosphate in the intestines, calcium acetate reduces absorption of phosphate into the body."

Answered by AI

What is PhosLo used for?

"Phoslo (calcium acetate) is a calcium supplement in the form of a tablet that is used to control the level of phosphate in the blood for patients who are on dialysis due to severe kidney disease."
